Looking to build a Gaming PC around the AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ AM2 3.2GHz (BLACK EDITION), are there any OcUK Forum Members that own this processor can tell me if a HSF is included in the retail box. Have visited other sites and it seems to be a question with no clear answer, some say yes and some no, so I am looking for an answer from someone that actually owns one... Any pics would be very helpfull..cheers :D

100% does NOT come with HSF.

I'm using my old AMD one at the moment while i await some spares for my water cooling. The AMD one cannot cope at all with this chip - so I'm not using any games or anything that uses processor power.

I don't think any of the black edition chips coem with HSF

Mate, all retail CPUs DO come with a HSF. Only OEM chips come without

EDIT : according to the descriptoion on OCUK the HSF is not supplied.

Very unusual

AMD produce the "black edition" processors for the "enthusiasts" market and have unlocked multipliers to allow more overclocking options ... clearly its more than likely that anyone choosing to pay a premium to go down this route is going to want to select their own cooler as well thus there's doesn't make sense to include one.

I think their may also be an implicit message of "you can up the multiplier on this but its up to you to sort out the cooling" rather than have people making "not fit for purpose" claims if a stock cooler was included.

Except you can't up the multi on the 6400+BE. Only the 5000+BE has an upwardly unlocked multiplier.

sorry, I'd read up on the 5000+BE and assumed that unlocked multiplier was the feature of the "black edition" ... I'm now struggling to see the point of it since there's a 6400+ available as well.

I'd go for the 5000+ BE, 65nm, less power, less heat and pretty much guranteed to run 3-3GHz on stock volts just from upping the multi.

Some people, including me, have pushed past 3.4, 3.5, 3.6 and even up to 3.7GHz on air!

I'd just struggle to see the point of anyone buying an AMD full stop atm when you consider the C2D's are faster and just as cheap...

I also struggle to see why a lot of people buy certain stuff... but its down to personal preferance and diffrent people have diffrent likes and dislikes...

Also AM2+ offers a MUCH better upgrade path and is future proof for some time, AMD have pledged to support the board for up to 4 years with Quad and Tri-core CPUs!

Intel can't touch that.

Also some of us find exceptional value in the 5000+ (£75) cpu, such as mine that runs at 3.5GHz if need be, more than enough computing power for any of todays stuff and I'm sure for the next year at least.

I agree with you and i see overclockers are now selling the 5000+BE for £66.
Its a bargain at that price.

Its a big box just for the processor, is there anything else in the box....

No wonder AMD are losing money, so much space and money being wasted on huge boxes, I don't dare to think how much was wasted on designing it. What fools are in charge of packaging? Are they stupid enough to think that the look of the packaging makes the slightest difference to their sales?

I hope they didn't pay someone too much to design a black box! :D

It does look nice though... but could be half the size, that picture makes it look colossal.

I think the black box is the same size as the other AMD retail boxes. I'm sure there are economies of scale in ordering the same size boxes from their supplier.

I am sorely tempted to get a 5000+BE to play around with...

I was able to overclock this processor from 2.6 GHz to 3.0 GHz without adjusting the voltage and it is stable. (I was able to do that due to there being no core multiplier restriction.) I could easily get another .2 GHz out of the processor by messing with the voltage multiplier.
I am using an artic freezer and the temps never go above 40c
