So, got me a new job. It's a good 6 miles or so away from my place - cycle-able but... not a distance I fancy doing, several hilly bits, and the traffic (read: frustrated commuter drivers) is horrendous and possibly dangerous (to Bristol locals - Gloucester Road - from the Arches up to Aztec West).

So, sortof formulating a plan involving a short train journey in the middle, which would mean me cycling about 1.5mi in the wrong direction first, then train, then ~1mi walk.

I could have course, drive or bus it. But there's the aforementioned traffic plus bang goes my daily exercise (am currently on my bike about half an hour a day).

Basically, the weekly costs are:
£10 if driving/bus
£15 if cycling/train/walking

Am thinking my health is worth about a fiver a week. But also thinking that I can see my resolve slipping if it's raining outside, wet waterproofs and busy trains - eugh...

What'd you do?

I would do the bus method and do exercise separately. Perhaps 2 days a week you cycle then the others you bus it.

I would like the comfort of driving myself.
However, I do walk to work everyday and back, not sure on the distance.
Just under a mile maybe.

I make up for exercise running/gym/home maybe ;)

I already exercise separately, but I'm currently in the middle of getting to a healthy weight and don't want to find I lose all my free time to doing it.

Impressive, platypus.

I'd take the train from redland station to parkway, then cycle. Once you get parkway the traffic isn't too bad (or perhaps I should say "as bad")

I'd probably cycle it personally because I'm assuming that Bristolian commuters can't be that much worse than their Edinburgh counterparts and I used to do about 7-8 miles each way to get into work most days.

However if you really aren't keen on that option then £10 per week isn't all that huge a price to pay for keeping healthy.

Mmm Montpelier station is right behind my house. But from either there or Redland I'd have to change at Bristol Temple Meads anyway, so may as well roll down the hill on my bike to get there...

I want to know how you can drive 60 miles a week on a fiver.

Or get a bus for a fiver a week! I work 1.5 miles from my house and a direct bus with about 4 stops would end up costing me a tenner a week.

Well that's a bugger, if it's any consolation I walk for 45 minutes every morning to temple meads :p

But then I like doing that, even if it is chucking it down

drive. Then spend the time saved exercising at your leisure, if you already exercise separately then add it to the routine you already do.
oh and save yourself the 15 quid !

Cycle all the way for sure. Unless the roads really are very dangerous. Might end up being the most expensive option if you go and buy full wet weather gear like I did though. I commute about the same distance but it is about 50% on cycle paths. Burn loads of calories too when going flat out, can eat pretty much whatever I want these days which is nice.

True that - I used the bus yesterday. 5 miles to Uni, 5 miles back

10 mile trip @ 20mpg = £2 in fuel
2 mile walk + 8 mile return busride = £2.20 bus ticket

Hmmmm.

*cough* depreciation *cough* road tax *cough* insurance *cough* running costs

Sorry, got a bit of a cough :p

I'm a big fan of making the commute to and from work and short and convenient as possible, no sense in knackering yourself out going to and from work :p

I'd wait until there's a bit more daylight and the weather gets nicer before cycling personally!

Well done on the new job :)

I would drive/bus to work and exercise seperately, that way:-

(a) You'll be able to push yourself harder when your exercising, and not worry about traffic/rules of the road etc.. (assuming gym or other controlled environment)

(b) You won't be deep inhaling traffic fumes on the way to work.
