Why do the 3870s give rubbish min fps??

all on high at 1280x1024, but I tried the settings that my x1900xt card was on, and i got worse performace with min fps can u believe? .. like the max fps is great but its the min fps thats more important, cos with my x1900xt i got a constant smoothish performance all the way through crysis, But my 3870 slows up quite badly?

I'm the same ... i found the game to be more stable on my heavily overclocked x1800xt 512 than my new overclocked 3870xt. I was using the same settings as u 1280 / High for both cards. A higher overall fps but feels more laggy .. probably a spikey fps ;p

Although i find that I can have AA/ AF with the 3870xt that wasn't possible with the x1800 .. so something is better atleast :)

I cant imagine playing through crysis at 1280x1024 all high on an X1900XT.

no those settings I use on my 3870, I use 1024x768, 2xAA, Everything on high accept for shadows on low, post processing on medium, shaders medium when I had my x1900xt card.. I tried the x1900xt settings on my 3870 and it makes the min fps drop to 12

The 2900 and 3870 have crappy minimum fps, must be the use of AA/AF, 2900 and BF2 use to lag like a bugger in heavy moments in the game with a 2900, 8800GT eats it for fun.

Im thinking maybe I should have got a 8800gt? but why are the 8800 cards so much better with giving much better min fps then 3870 cards. Even when I overclock the 3870 to 850mhz the min fps is still the same?

depends how fast it recovers i guess, the 8800's have a better GPU so i guess the hit is smaller maybe? On my GTS it is literally only a momentary thing and doesnt affect gameplay at all

If you read this thread:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17835250
it will give you a better picture of real performance for the card rather than assumptions

I honestly have no idea personally, just taking an educated guess

Yeh the 3870 x2 cards are only like 2fps higher for the min fps then my 3870 card in crysis, and I get 42 fps max I think, and thats everything on high, no aa, and at 1280x1024. so it looks like the 3870 x2 cards are pointless in crysis??

But again why does my x1900xt gives higher min fps in crysis then my 3870 card???

Its because ATi changed the way they do the AA, they now do it shader based which gives a big hit when its enabled, AA is supposed to be going that way though, thats why they done it, trouble is though, by the time shader based AA is mainstream, the 2900/3800's are going to be years old, so there was no point them doing it now.

They used to be the dogs ****** at AA, i remember when i went from a GF4 to a 9800pro, i couldn't believe how small the hit was when using AA on it compared to when i used it on my GF4, as that used to cripple, tables have turned now though seen as they've changed it.:p

It reminds of when Nvidia slapped SM3.0 on the 6800's, and so everyone was buying those over the faster x800's, yet by the time we had about 2 games using it, the 6 series were about 1-2 years old, and could only run those games low/medium details, and in a res that was about the size of a stamp. :D

Im not using aa,, but when I put it to 2x in crysis the min fps goes to 12fps, but as I take the aa up to 4x and 8x, the min fps increases?? FIGGER THAT ONE OUT. lol

I'm not sure what's going on for you Speedy?. I did try Crysis but it was only with the 2900Pro I have and the FPS wasn't the best but this was with an X2 3800 @ 2.8Ghz, 1gb(2x512mb) of DDR400 @ DDR466 2.5-3-3-7 1T, DFI Ultra-D and the 2900Pro @ 847Mhz and 1000Mhz memory.

I might pop the card in during the night or 2moro and give it a run again and see if I receive the same performance with this system.

If Crysis isn't doing well when I test then it's down to one game then as on every single other title that I tried, the 2900 kicked my X1900XT upside down and inside out, it showed the old GFX what it's all about :).

I'll also test Dirt for you as I have it installed but we have different systems now and it won't be a good comparison. My mums got my old parts now but her PSU couldn't handle the 2900Pro.

Im a tad dissapointed with my 3870, cos the min fps are rubblish, I get 15fps in crysis, and with my x1900xt card I got 17fps

I can understand why you are disappointed. To me minimum fps is critical.

Currently, the 3870 is the next card I want to get but what you are saying is concerning:confused:

I've got a feeling that a lot of later games are biased towards Nvidia cards...

Try the TF2 maxed out online with 2 dozen players and the 3870 should fly (even mine does quite well)...valve/ half life/ source games seemed to have played properly on ati

Is the 2900pro that good?
