just arrived..my personal review of 3870x2

Tom|Nbk must be jealous.

How could anyone not be impressed by a card that only slightly edges past the GTX (that has been out since 2006), by having to use 2 of ATI's flagship cores and costs more money?

AHA dude, check out the 3d mark thread... two gtx's in crossfire can't beat it. Only three can beat one of those cards. Please sit.

Stupid questions time!

I have my HD3870 X2 sat next to me ready to go in my PC tonight (or tomorrow depending on alcohol content), do I:

1) ..need to uninstall the Catalyst 8.1 drivers first? (using X1900 Crossfire at the moment)
2) ..uninstall the cards (in Windows Device Manager) before taking them out
3) ..need to download a different version of ATI Catalyst drivers (I believe someone mentioned a hotfix for something - Crysis?)

Thanks in advance! :)
it should just install by itself without uninstalling 8.1... all the cards uses the same drivers

hehe what ever you do dont get 2 x2's and try using them right now - it aint gonna work till march.

infact your prob better off just waiting for their new gpu to come out later down the line than get 2 X2's as they will have multi gpu as well as a better performance.

Wrong, there are beta drivers for 3870x2 crossfire out now. :)

See here.

So will my current mobo run 2 3870x2 cards (asus pk5 deluxe) ...making that quad gpu.....

I wasn't talking about 3DMark, I was talking about things that matter, like games.

I'm not disputing the fact that the X2 is faster than the GTX, what I'm saying is that ATI took over a year to do it, had to use 2 of their best cores, and it still doesn't beat the GTX by a great deal. That's not very impressive at all.

Its called delays and problems in manufacturing the original r600 core. It happens and thats all there is to it. Geforce fx ring any bells? This time around ati had no high end version of the core, mainly due to leakage and heat output. r600 is behind us and r700 is on the horizon.

3DMARK means crap when it comes to comparing GFX card performance , its just an excuse to see who's got the biggest epenis, ATI probably optimised the crap out of the drivers to get decent 3DM scores, yet they still suck in most games when compared to the competition.:o

Regardless of that ATI currently have the fastest GPU available.

Because the fastest single core card they have out is a midrange card and they can't be compared to the gtx or ultra. The 2900xt competed well with the gts series untill it got refreshed with more shaders etc.

Stop beating the dead horse yes they didn't do well this round it happens, no company is infallible.
