Right well my flatmate just moved out (he was paying the broadband) so now we have to choose who we want to set back up with. We were with Virgin before and didnt have any massive complaints but I was wondering if anyone else had a better suggestion?

Been with SkyBB for ages

A high ping to start off with but all you need to do is email them and its sorted :)

Very good speeds and no disconnects

Virgin can be OK in some areas, but it's on the whole, considerably poor. They have far too large a customer base which their infrastucture cannot support. Expect poor pings and downstream speeds at peak times.

I've never had a problem with download speeds or pings with Virgin. I'm on 20MB with traffic shaping between 4pm-12am, but they cut you down to 5-6MB (after downloading 3GB) which is still quite fast and doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Zen. Not the cheapest but certainly one of the best. I've been with them for 5 years now and not one minute of downtime. Excellent speeds and just always works first time every time. No monthly contract either and if you move address they will transfer your connection free of charge. :)

Probably a good idea to find out what services are available to you, how far you are from your local exchange and what sort of speeds you can expect before asking for recommendations - recommendations which may be irrelevant because you won't be able to get that level of service, because that service isn't available to you or because you have access to better alternatives.

Virgin media are generally fine for me (using 20mb service) although a couple of days ago, someone decided to cut the cable running down the side of my house, and I had no internet/tv/phone for 2 days, all fixed now though

I'm with BT Option 3, i've been using BT for the last four years & i've had no problems with unlike my mates who all use Virgin.

omg I cringe when I see a fellow BT user recommend them. They are terrible to say the least, as soon as 1700hrs comes around, my 7mb line turns into a 512k line, like clockwork every day until 0100 when mysteriously it turns back into my 7mb line, hmmm traffic shaping

Considerably poor?

I'd agree to be honest...I don't really know why I'm still with them.

It's now:

4:00pm - 9:00pm
If you exceed 3gb download/1200mb upload you'll be limited for 5 hours.

This table was contructed by Annie Brion from the BY newsgroups - so as you can see, even if you hit the limits...you can still download a LOT of stuff.

i cringe too. :p

this is the problem with BT. many people get a great service so of course, that's why they recommend them. can hardly blame them for that.......

but on the flipside, BT can be absolutely ********* terrible and there's no rhyme or reason to it. i guess it's just luck of the draw. and of course support are an absolute joke as they can barely speak a word of english. luckily when my BT service went to the dogs, i was out of contract and was able to leave. :)

sign with BT at your peril. you MAY get a great service if you're lucky. if you feel like playing russian roulette with 12/18 months worth of subscriptions then go for it. :D

on the other hand, if you feel like playing safe......

any entranet reseller
