was in desperate need for as5 so i phoned my local pc shop, asked him for as5 and he told me that they dont sell it as it will invalidate the warrenty if used on cpu's etc. kinda lauged at him and said it was ok.

is this true?

You kinda know the answer to this surely?! :)

The shop are talking rubbish IMO.

Incidentally, what did they suggest instead, if anything?

I would imagine that using any other heatsink/thermal compound would invalidate Intel/AMDs retail chip t+c's as they provide you with the heatsink/thermal compound that has been tested by them.

yea, hence the laugh!

Coolermaster stuff, thats all they do i think, that and Servisol, it was like water, just squirted out from under the heatsink, this was back when i had an amd 3200 athlon, wouldnt touch the stuff again especially with the quad

Technically they are correct as AMD and Intel CPU's come with heatsinks that have pre applied (approved) thermal interface material. If you dont use there heatsinks then that invalidates the warranty. Iirc it says something about this in the warranty boolet with retail CPU's, at least it did with the AMD ones. How OEM cpu warranties work I have no idea.

We all know it tosh as intel/AMD would have a very hard time proving otherwise but if we are being pedantic then yes, they are correct.

As the supplied thermal material is one time only use you would have to an alternative. It would be deemed an unreasonable restriction to void a warranty just because you needed to reseat the HSF or upgrade the MB.

unfortunately stock paste is rubbish, my cpu cooler is using as5 and my north and south bridge chipsets and mosfetts are done with arctic ceramique, im currently waiting on a 780i mobo from evga and the simple mods i have done dont validate the warranty. if anything theese sort of mods should be done on a regular basis just to keep things in check.

dont think that they should be done on a regular basis, why the need. if the HSF has been removed then yes, re-apply, but not just for the hell of it.

oh, armoy, i was out them neck of the woods few days ago. very wet and dull looking
