2007 - Sony PS3 sells 8.83 million, XBOX 360 sells 7.3 million

Well maybe you should think about it. Like McManic said, sales of the 360 are slowing down, so the number for the PS3 to be outselling the 360 is much less. Your's and rp are assuming that the 360's sales (and i suppose the PS3's) stay the same. But the 360 is seeing a drop off, and the PS3 is starting to see it pick up.

And IMO 2009 has better games for the PS3 than the 360. To me, there are no exclusives to the 360 that i am eagerly awaiting, besides Alan Wake, and God knows if we will see that this year.

look I'm trying to keep this objective, forget about which console you prefer or which console is going to have the best exclusives, because even as a 360 user I agree the PS3 has a stonking line up over the next few years, think about it just based on mathematics, forget that they are even consoles, they could be toasters for all I care, based on the sales figures to hand it's going to be hard for the PS3 to catch up anytime soon, at the very best I could see the PS3 catching up over a 2 year period but based on the manufacturers shipped figures that's being very very optimistic, I genuinely hold no allegiance to either manufacturer, I'm just trying to look at this from an analysts view point.

Lol not at all but how the conversation suddenly turned to 'if the PS3 carries on outselling the 360 2:1' confused me if we don't look at all the territories.

We all know the PS3 has and will continue to outsell the 360 in Japan, that was always a given; the fact that it's made any kind of dent is a small miracle.

It's also known that MS stuffed the channel last year and whilst claiming they'd sold 10m they'd really only sold 7 or so. So in real terms, as has been worked out in detail on NeoGaf etc. the 360 and PS3 sold pretty close amounts in 07 worldwide.

What we can't argue about is that the 360 stuffed the PS3 overall in software sales for 07 though.

the 2:1 thing was being debated as the only way the PS3 could overtake the xbox 360, not that is has.

Software sales over 07 don't really mean much as the 360 has 10m units at the start of the year and the PS3 has less than 3, so hardly surprising that it sold more games.

and if this does happen this year (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17836447), and yes I know it's a BIG if, then you can expect to see a massive upsurge in PS3 sales. Well if the it worked for the PSP by making it a tiny bit slimer and a little bit lighter then surely it would work for the PS3?

yes, good for Sony, at least the suport their platforms unlike the xbox1. End of the day Sony done very well in its 1st year against the 360 when you consider all the factors it was facing - only good things can come

All I can think of is that the PS2 is a great console which is still going strong and making Sony money 8 years after it was released. Kudos for Sony for supporting a console until it's natural death rather than cutting it off at the first sign of a slow down.

They didn't support it out of the goodness of their heart you know.

They are a buisness,like microsoft,so how much money they can make was probably the deciding factor.

Seems strange that when there is some news that is positive in regards to the ps3, a lot of people appear to either down play the news or add a few trolling comments.

I wouldn't expect anything less from a company that did so well with the PS2. Plus they have Japan as well. Which to be fair... 360 has a few supporters there... but not much lol.

I would like to see the game attach rate of each console though.

Yeah must be hard, I mean when news is posted about the PS3 not in a good light (GTA delay) then you get people posting how they are bored of recycled news headlines and people talking about it, or they claim to not care
