Chinese Women

guess lol

Well assuming Japanese, they sound a little extreme (to say the least). In Japan there are certainly no lack of bars, complete with heavy drinkers. It's not like they are all breaking out in blotches/passing out after a pint or whatever. And I know there are a heck of a lot of heavy-drinking fisherman types in Japan too, not to mention the drunken salarymen lingering in bars after work.

Theres a difference between a 'lower tolerance' and just being plain allergic.

Its not a myth, a significant (and majority) proportion of the middle eastern/asian population have a genetic defect in the gene encoding for a component of the bodies method of breaking down ethanol (alcohol).

Unless of course my lecturer was misinformed

As I already mentioned, I'm only going by what Japanese people have said to me directly, rather than western textbooks/lectures etc. I'm not saying medical science is wrong, I'm just going by my own experience.

Chinese, I thought the thread title was helping :p Personally I have little experience with Japanese people, but I know an awful lot of people from China/Hong Kong and it is pretty common. It is definitely not a myth.

My other half drank plenty while at uni, or at least tried, but she never built up a tollerance to alcohol at all. One or two archers and lemonade and she was out of it. Think that's how I pulled her the first time ;)

Anyhow, back on topic with regards to weight, I do find that Chinese people tend to be slimmer than those in the uk. My dinner when I'm at their place usually consists of the following:

A bowl of rice
Steamed fish
Steamed Choi with soy sauce and garlic
Roast Chicken/Duck/Pork
Tofu
Steamed King Prawns
Chinese soup (ie/ hot water with a bit of flavour)

Guess this explains it a bit. My other half's mum is about 5 ft and 6 stone lol. She also eats more than me at dinner!

I assumed Japanese because that's what I was talking about when you quoted me. And I also did mention that I couldn't comment about other regions.

 Research in the 'west' has no bearing on the validity of investigation into 'eastern' genotype.

Furthermore a lot of this sort of research comes out of Japan.

Either way its OT so, back to 'Chinese women' :p

Ok, let me put it another way (that is less likely to be nitpicked);

My Japanese friends claim to be able to drink a lot, and dissmiss suggestions that they are any less tolerant to alcohol than westerners, hence my earlier comment.

Better?

Is it? I recall reading an article on it in the paper and the author seemed to think it was very real.

It was Horizon wasn't it? to do with western culture drinks a lot of alcohol where in the east they drink a lot of tea, and over time the body "evolved" to suit, and westerners develop a higher tolerance to alcohol.

word on the street is history, to make our water safe to drink we brewed beer/porter/grog the old dudes out in the east made tea, both ways purified water and could be kept safe a long time for drinking later, the dudes in africa kinda did neither, look how far they got...

some of my korean friends drink more than me, some drink less, some get drunk after half a pint (as in ready to puke up) others will skull whisky like its water, all depends on person, my mums a huge lightweight, she's not east asain

and Seek: you a big fan of Lotteria too then? aaprt from 32 ounces of cheese sparkle I cant make much out from that pic!

I'm having to skip a trip to Hong Kong in April as I'm saving for my wedding so i am jealous mate!

The question is, did you get to choose a fish and crab from a big tank and have them cook it for you? Fresh seafood is unbelievable!

We have..our secrets.

It's just that chinese girls are way obsessed with their weights

Slightly off topic but is it true that folk from the far east region have an intolerence to alcohol? I seem to recall a TV programme from way back portraying as such.

Its true for me and all of my family, apparently quite a lot of Oriental people (Im Chinese) lack an enzyme that breaks down alcohol which leads to the usual flushing of the face, raised heart beat and headaches, feeling sick etc. I cant even drink a pint before feeling quite sick.

I don't see that as a bad thing, given that alcohol is essentially a cell poison (which is why spirits have an anti-septic effect).

About a quater of south-east Asians lack the gene for alcohol dehydrogenase and so rely on lowering their blood alcohol after drinking via excreting it in urine and on their breath.
