there has been a lot of slating going on when it comes to new movies being released

hitman, aliens vs predator, i am legend, etc

i thought all of these movies were good, i however thought other movies such as superbad being funny in places, the whole thing was plain retarded, for you guys to go on about, OMG its nothing compared to the book, or nothing compared to the original ALIENS, etc, etc.

come on get a life, look at the movie from a new perspective, forget all the rest and judge the movie on its own, i am legend was ruined by the last half an hour being rushed, everything up til then was very good, overall it came out alright, hitman was quite good, got a bit boring in places though, aliens versus predator requiem was fantastic though

the best film ive seen in the past year without a doubt has to be

The Kingdom - fantastic movie, slow paced up until the last half an hour too like i am legend, then the **** hits the fan and an all out war breaks out.

you guys are taking movies way too seriously, its a film - you are supposed to chillout relax and enjoy it by immersing yourself in the story, if you reckon you could do better, i would like to see you try, why not make a movie and stick it up on youtube

for every movie thread in here ther are normally 15 negative posts to every positive post, are peoples standards becoming too high? not everybody can come up with "the matrix" every few months, even then i reckon matrix 2 and 3 got worse and worse and could have been a lot better, but there was too much hype around them and they never lived up to it.

anyway i hate people who criticise movies, restaurants, companies, when they have no real clue of whats involved and could never even come close to making anything as good

What I can agree with is the annoyance of "It isn't as good as the book" posts.
I personally nearly always view the film & book as two totally seperate things with one complimenting the other - there is no way one can replace the other.

People don't seem to understand that a film on average can be 2 - 2.5hrs at most (although some directors are told they can go for 3hrs) whereas to read a book cover to cover would take a lot longer than that.
To make the "perfect" film of a book it would need to be almost as long as it would take to read the book - impossible.

Lord of the Rings was excellent and all three films are still some of my favourite.
A perfect translation from the book?
No, far from it - each and every film had omissions, changes etc from the written word.
However the end result was still something that got the story told and gave us an epic film.

Batman Begins was an excellent film, a new direction as far as the Batman films go.
A perfect translation from the comic book?
Not at all - the film was based losely on Year 1 but then again it grabbed influences from other story arcs and included many a scene that simply "wouldn't happen" in the comics.
But again the end result is a perfectly watchable film.

The Harry Potter films.
Book to film again - Nowhere near, well off the mark.
Once again major parts missed and parts of the story changed.
Doesn't make the films dire, all of them have been very good (with the exception of the latest which I'll only rate as "OK").

What I will say is that the majority of remakes can be attacked and in the majority of cases they simply aren't as good as the originals.
Hollywood is getting extremely lazy and they want to remake anything and everything - its easy money for them.
However most of these remakes simply don't work, aren't half the film the original was and a waste of my £6.50!

the whole waste of £6 argument is total nonsense as well. £6 is nothing its what you pay for a 2 drinks in a club. saying that i never paid a penny to watch any of the major releases over the past few years, the only time i go to the cinema is if im on a date, or taking my wee bro out, then i wouldnt care if the ticket was £10, ive had my fare share of free movies

Theres a fine line to being a critic and being pretentious. Most usually cross it.

Bang on. Pretentiousness is unfortunately an integral part of being a critic... the level of self-belief needed to be one is very high. Same could be said for forumites too. :D

what i find stupid is some people on these boards inability to think for themselves, some1 makes a post saying (x) is crap don't go and see it, and u get at least 5 people saying " i was gonna see this but now am not". its like people take some1 elses opinion to be the bread and butter of how a film is.

i never judge a film on what sum1 else has said, al make me mind up AFTER i've seen it.

its better than some of the idiot reviews on radiotimes website, i cant understand a lot of what they write.. whats the point in hiring english academics to write reviews that only the minority can decifer =/

I'm sorry - I cannot make any sense of your post.

The whole waste of £6 argument is total nonsense
How so?
If I pay £6.50 to watch a film and it is rubbish/dire and/or a complete waste of my time then surely I've wasted my £6.50?
I could have spent it on something else - how is this argument nonsense?

£6 is nothing its what you pay for a 2 drinks in a club
Well it's not what I pay for 2 drinks in a club - me and the wife very rarely go to clubs these days, we didn't exactly go often when we were younger.
Anyway it would appear that you are saying that the wasted £6.50 argument is not valid because £6.50 is nothing?
Next time you have £6.50 in your pocket send it to me if it's really worthless.

You've never paid a penny to see a cinema release over the past few years
Hummm...so you either work in a cinema - fair enough I can now possibly see why you're bitter & twisted towards films in general.
Or you somehow get into a cinema without paying - not exactly big & clever and worth boasting about, it's basically theft.
Or you're implying that you download cinema releases - again not big & clever and again tantamount to theft.
Or of course you may have just won hundreds of competitions.

Only time you go to the cinema is when on a date or taking your brother out
Either you've done neither for the past few years or you're taking your date or brother into a cinema for free as well.
Are you getting people to let you and the date in via the fire exit or something?

Wouldn't care if the ticket was £10
But you aren't paying for cinema for the past few years, but you wouldn't care if the ticket costs £10.
It doesn't - so pay your £5 - £6

I always judge a film on how long before i look at my watch and how many times i look at it. Less the better. That said. A v P requiem is bad. I was looking forward to it and very disappointed. It dragged 2 A list movies into a crap B movie horror show. I had more fun watching good luck chuck

Hehe I was the opposite... went to see it expecting to hate it and ended up really enjoying it. Horses for courses. :D

Films are completely subjective, fair play that on the most part the oppinions are held over a majority of people but somone out there is going to like the worst of films not every one is going to like everything. You find a lot of critics or people who like to voice there oppinions are the sort of people that think just because they dislike or think a movie is a waste of time are the sort of people that think everyone should feel the same and cant understand why someone would opose there thoughts.
At the end of the day a film will never be a waste of time because the odds say someone out there will enjoy it and think that it is money well spent so just for that reason the film was succesfull somehow all people need to do is realise there opinions arnt the final word on a movie.

Imo anyone with half an idea of how films are made (technically) and a passion for film has a right to comment :).

the whole £6 argument - do you know how much a ticket to a football game costs? they last roughly the same amount in time, both are entertaining, etc, £6 to go to watch a newly released film, which cost millions to make (in some rare cases they can cost less than a million - but the majority do cost quite a bit), £6 is nothing in comparison, I aint taken ma wee bro out in ages, as for the date part, ive had my fare share over the past few years, but ive normally already seen the movie before hand for free

i say everyone should judge the movie for themselves, most people who criticise a movie dont know what they are talking about, yes movies can be flawed, but things which are flawed can still be good

The only people who always deliver positive reviews of films are poster quote whores like Paul Ross.

If I see a film and think it's lousy then I'll say so. Just use your reply button if you disagree.

(I've rated this thread too ;))

I don't see a point in film critics, just random people saying whether they liked a film or not, their opinion isn't any better than anyone elses. So why they are employed is a mystery to me.

The whole 'You couldn't do anything better' thing is such a stupid argument.

Amen.

Well if film is your thing, then the more movies you watch the more films you can referance and make critical evaluations against.

If you are into movies that much, much like a film critic, you are obviously looking for a higher bar of entertainment.

Rich

<edit>

Oh, if film critics annoy you that much, ignore them and just watch the film, just because you liked them and they didn't or vice versa - isn't going to make the world implode.
