I don`t think he is what do you think he is worth?

That is a lot of money for a defensive midfielder who has not scored for us in the league and his passing isn`t great. I think Rafa could spend more wisely.

He's been the best defensive midfielder in the league this season, he's proven Premiership quality.

When Man Utd spend a similar amount of money on "potential" (Anderson/Nani) I think it's fair to say Masch is easily worth what MSI are asking.

Of course he is.

If Carrick is worth 18.6, and hargreeves is worth 17m, then Mascherano is worth at least that.

The only guy who can keep kaka in his pocket, he was awesome CL final, and has been awesome the majority of the season.

Well he's defensive, his job isn't to score, it's the job of his partner in midfield too, usually Gerrard and considering his scoring record this season, Mascharano does his job well.

In the market today 18m is probably about right. Hagreaves was the same price, as was Carrick.
He seems superb everytime I see him. There's more to scoring ;)

Dude have you watched Flamini play at all this season?

Okay, you're a Liverpool fan I will not begrudge you of your opinion, but coming from a neutral (supporting wise) P.O.V I have to say I disagree.

EDIT - To say he's not in the same class is quite frankly outrageous ..

TBH this season, Mascharano hasn;t had much competition to be the "best".. Hargreaves/Carrick havent either played enough or performed constantly, does Flamini even play the holding role? He seems very attacking at times, Essien doesn't really play defensive, Makelele who usually is miles ahead of everyone is getting on now. Anderson seems to be coming on at Man U but if he's regarded as defensive is another thing?

So Mascharano doesn't have to be world class to be the best in the Prem right now.

Erm, apart from a couple of games recently, yeah, all the time. Fabregas was out for a week or so, and he played with Gilberto (I think it was) holding alongside him, but other than that, he's played the DM position all season. And he's been bloody fantastic there. I'd go so far as to say he's our most important defensive player, ahead of Toure and Gallas, easily. Every time we've had a game where we've looked shaky at the back (getting spanked by Spurs, losing to Middlesbrough, losing to Sevilla), guess what our one constant has been? No Flamini.

He's the reason we sold Diarra so quickly. We just don't need him when we've already got someone so damn good.

If Carrick costs £18m, it's easy to see why Mascherano would cost £18m.

It's just the way the market is, the quality of the player is rarely the only factor in deciding the transfer fee.

Isnt the £18m supposed to include wages as well? In which case its an absolute bargain.

No that was a rumour, this is all transfer fee apparently.

The guy is only 23 I believe and has 35 argentina caps. That shows quality and in it's self speaks volumes.
