Your root canal experiences here

just looked at the definition of root canal and it seems that I've already had one! On my front tooth! That will teach me for swimming into walls lol :p Definitely not a painful procedure!

My dad used to have fillings without injections. If they got too much he'd ask for anaesthetic.

This leads me to believe that my dad is harder than he looks.
How odd. The pain of hitting a nerve with a drill will far exceed the pain of the injection. Was he just being as manly as manly can be? Or did he really cry like a 10 year old girl at the thought of a needle?

I've had one and hardly felt a thing but my wife was climbing the walls after she had one. It turned out her dentist hadn't completely removed the nerve and she needed a second visit.:(

I was supposed to have a root canal when I was about 14 at my original dentist. After hearing the news I changed dentist and he told me having root canal was stupid, about 2 mins of work and I was out and happy.

Lucky me though I guess :D

The first one I had done was about 9 years ago and I cried like a baby (nearly).
I'd never had so much pain in all my life everytime he jabbed the metal into my tooth to take out the nerve.
It got to the point where he couldn't give me any more jabs and I had to endure the pain.
My mother actually took me (I was 40) and when I saw her I just put my head on her shoulder.
I then had to have another 2 or 3 visits to finish off and there was bad pain on every visit.

A few months later I had to have another one done and I considered being put asleep but it would cost another £70 on top of the £230 for the root canal.
I decided against it, tensed myself for excrutiating pain but none came.
he dug and dug and I felt nothing.
I asked why and he said that the first one was a live root and this one was a dead root.

About a year later I had a bad abcess and the pain was really bad.
Again I opted to save the tooth but he said I couldn't have an injection because of the abcess so he would drill + dig without anaesthetic
He told me the pain in my abcess was so bad that when he drilled in I'd feel instant relief - yeah OK.
He was right and I had a root canal without a jab.

This leads me to believe that my dad is harder than he looks.

I've had all 4 of my fillings done with no injection, it's not that painful people just think it will be.

Got a root canal booked for 05/02/08 - never had one done before!

Have heard they're meant to be pretty nasty, so, as you would imagine, I am rather looking forward to this...not!:p

Share your horrors and/or delights of root canal treatment with me - just so I know what I'm letting myself in for. :o:(

Took about 30minutes, didnt feel a thing - just had a numb mouth

Stop being a girl!

He doesn't like the fact that anaesthetics mess your face up for hours afterwards, and sometimes make you feel ill.

He's got no problem with needles... He used to give blood a lot.

I had one last year and it was fine apart from the injections. I could still feel pain when she started so I just stopped her and she gave me another dose. After that it didn't hurt. Wasn't exactly fun but it wasn't nearly as bad as I feared from some of the stories I had heard.

Any last hour thoughts? I'm due at 11:15am, so I hope your thoughts are with me...:o

My thoughts are with you. I hope it's quick and painless! Now I'll be back at 12.15 to hear how it wasn't as bad as you thought...

*off to uni*

Literally, i've had bad toothache, it's a bit rotten... i'd rather deal with the pain!

Please don't. Here is the reason why..

I originally had two all four wisdom teeth out - however they managed (I believe) to crack my lower rear molars on both sides.

Roll on time - I had to have two root canals on both those molars.

Roll on a bit more - I had a trip to Iceland, where during the time my root canal popped allowing an infection to develop.
The infection caused an abcess that grew down my throat and mouth. The condition is called Ludwigs Angina and was a common cause of fatalities before antibiotics. I got off the plane and went straight to the out-of-hours doctor (although ER would have been acceptable as I was starting to have problems breathing as the abcess closes the throat/airway).
I spent a month on antibiotics and it took about two weeks after the abcess ruptured by itself (brushing teeth) .. the smell/taste is hideous.. before I could open my mouth wide enough for the dentist to get to the tooth and extract it.

I have had a phobia about dentists (I spent every thursday morning for two years in dental hospital).

So - please, face your fear and go to a dentist. Even mention to them that you have a phobia (they'll understand).

I have my next checkup appointment coming up so if I can face it - so can you!

edit: I posted some photos a while ago but I deleted them from the webspace due to space.

<absolute horror story>

 *goes to brush teeth*

I've had a root canal once, someone smashed their head into my tooth and it eventually turned black. So it was dead. Or so they thought. I didn't have any anaesthetic and the nerve wasn't completely dead! It was almost dead though, so when he removed it, it was this strange, dull pain. Perhaps I'm weird, but it's the kind of pain that has this odd sense of pleasure to it. I'm not masochistic or anything, but it was kinda satisfying.

I was lucky though as I had a really, really good dentist. It was a very straightforward procedure. I had no problems with it whatsoever (bar the nerve thing). I then later required a veneer on my tooth to make it look well... not black, which was also nice and simple. Then a few years later my mate smashed a bottle into it, chipping the bottom off it. This then required more work. You might say that tooth has been a bit unlucky.

Touch wood no other fillings ever though :p

Christ, I have gone sweaty just reading this, I cannot stand the Dentists, the only time I have gone sine I left college 12 years ago is to have three teeth extracted. My problem is soft teeth, either inherited or due to some drugs my mother was on before I was born (her teeth went soft as well :( ) so I have some damaged teeth, they don't annoy me so I am ok with it.

Problem now is that the wife booked us both in with a new dentists in the area, and before they will take any new patients, they want to do a checkup, great! so 1st March she has booked us in. She doesn't know that she will be going on her own.

The only way I will step foot inside a dentists is if I am blind drunk. I will refuse any treatment unless I can have a general anaesthetic.

The problem I think stems back to my child hood dentist who always had some work to do on me, and never used enough pain relief. Plus the dentist had only 3 teeth, and they were rotten

Well I'm still alive. Wasn't a bad experience, but the filing of the roots/canals was a bit ewww! :p

Have to go back next week, because the tooth is still infected, and he's put more disinfectant in the tooth and put a temp. filling in.

Not half as nervous about it, as I was last week. :o

told you it wasn't bad, yes its the filling of them with the electric gloop which is a bit peculiar

think I had 3 visits in total

Not sure what he did exactly, but I was told to sit tight and it felt like he was pulling something out from the roots. That was probably the worst bit, even then it was more of a discomforting tingle. :o:p

:( I might have to have one soon if the filling I just had doesn't do the job. I'd not been to the dentist for a couple of years, but it seems that my love of fruit juice has given me need for 4 fillings (one of which is possibly RCT). mean dentist.
