Thinking of changing my motor to a BMW 323 Coupe auto,
E36 P reg one.

Want something older thats sportyand not too flash and is reliabe.

Any advice what to watch out for ? i've seen one that looks like its brand new for £2600.

Anyone know what the 5speed auto box is like on these ?

I've absolutely no idea what Muffin is talking about, the autobox in the E36 is not known for being unreliable.

My advice would be to avoid the 323i and get a 328i instead. With BMW 6 cylinder engines, they all cost the same to run - servicing is the same, parts cost the same, repairs cost the same, even fuel economy differs by just 1.5mpg. So you may as well take advantage of this and get the largest - in this case, the 328i.

Went for a test drive in the 323 coupe, well my mate did I was passenger.

Nice car, very nice. But it just felt slow, didn't like it at all.

Please stop posting out of context crap, its spoiling threads. That quote relates to the £900 K reg 316 auto you found.

It was in refernce to an E46 318 Auto and an E36 P Reg 318.

I don't really know what you are talking about, can you go away unless you've something constructive to post? Perhaps you could try being clever in the Testing forum, then come back once you've got the hang on of it.

Has our friendship come down to this, what a joke :(

I had a '98 323i Auto, the box was fantastic.
Agree with Fox though, its got the running costs and pretty much the same economy as a 328i but not the power.

Go for a 328i (sport!) :]

Auto box is fine on these.

(Own an 10 yr old 323 Saloon Auto)

Std mode is smooth, sports mode is 1/2 decent on them too. I'd agree try and find a 328i, extra 20 odd bhp and torque is worth it.

(of course there's always bbtb / manifold for the 323...if you want to go down the mod route :) )

Same mod works on the 328i to give you 210ish bhp :)

add a gruppe m (rep) box and some more power released, then off to simon at emaps to get it....... hehe

plenty of power available for little cost really. especially as the bbtb/manifold option can be done on a swap basis making it cheaper!

I saw a nice increase from 167bhp to 195 on my 323 with:

DaveF induction kit
bbtb
Modified 325 manifold
Chipped Uk chip (Who incidentally ripped us off...but thats another story)

Fudge knows where my rr printouts are though. Difference is noticeable.

She'll be going soon though...no idea what will be replacing it. Gibraltar 2nd hand market aint exactly fluid, and everythings overpriced :(

Not too bothered about the power difference between a 323 and 328.
Doesn't look like an lot really.

Just seem a rather tidy example of a totally standard P reg 323 coupe in green with standard alloys, and looks like its been very well looked after.
Non leather though ! not that bothered about leather !

Tomorrow i'll phone them up an ask about history and milage etc.

Its still a lot better car than a Peug 306 phase 3 1.6 auto ! ;)
