Thats well over 30mpg Imperial around town from a 150bhp petrol engine. What part of that is unacceptable?

US Gallons are smaller than ours

US Gallon = 3.785 litres
UK Gallon = 4.54 litres

Therefore a 30mpg car in the US is 35mpg in the UK. :)

It usually does vary daily over here. It was $2.70 last week, then up to $3.10 at the weekend and now it's currently at $2.94 here.

why is it American cars always have massive engines etc yet never have a high horsepower compared to smaller European/UK engines?

*please note i know little about cars.

I was just curious if he had miscalculated, and I'm not sure what he is trying to get at.

It's not an exceptional figure for the Motorway.

Petrol's cheap so efficiency wasn't an important factor in the design. Couple that to a desire for comfort and low cost over performance and a big unstressed engine makes a lot of sense.

I've seen garden sheds with better aerodynamics than a Caliber!

It returns more than 32 imperial miles to the gallon around town. It has a petrol engine and 150bhp. This is good fuel economy. This is infact suprisingly good fuel economy. Your avergae 2 litre car here won't do that.

It's obvious what I was trying to get at. You criticise the car for its ineffiency when in reality, it is pretty efficient.

Works out to be around 37mpg - again, hardly shappy for a 150bhp car of that size and shape?

It's what the car industry is totally leaning on over here at the moment. It is all about mpg, what with the gas prices rising to be claimed as 'expensive'.

Which I can only see as a good thing!
