Bosses taking credit for your work

You work hard whilst others around you scratch their heads, you deliver on time and under budget... then your bosses takes all the credit, backslapping each other in self-congratulatory circulated e-mails and champagne parties you're not invited to.

I know this is pretty much a 'fact of life' in the workplace, but do you consider bosses taking the credit:

1. The norm, just get on with it
or
2. A clear sign you're in the wrong job
 
Hmm, well I just think bosses are supposed to backslap you when you do something right and well derserved within their company :confused: I know in many places it doesnt work like that, but that should be the norm, why should they get the credit for your work and you get jack back from any one else? Unless your job is to do your bosses work.
 
I always email everyone concerned in a project when ive done something awesome, nothing better than blowing your own trumpet.

Its always the way, they probably went through the same thing when they were at your level in the team. Just keep working hard and eventually you'll be recognised!
 
Most of the time, I don't have this problem where I work now, have done in the past, the main thing is that if people take all the credit, they don't get my help the same next time. However, that sort of approach does rely on you having skills with regards to something so they can't just get someone else to do it in your place...
 
keep asking for pay rises with your boss

just have an outline saying "i've done this, this and this" etc

they won't give unless you ask :), i had 5 in one year in my last job
 
Like bledd said, keep a note of it all and use it during your next pay review.

Unfortunately, it's a fact of life. Congratulations and thanks rarely make it down more than one or two steps in the chain of command and, even if they do go further, it's usually an email to the entire organisation or a £5 M&S voucher :D
 
Sometimes you have to blow your own trumpet.

One of my old managers was a 'I have done this for you' type person when giving a piece of work to a project manager or something. We (as a team) picked him up on it quite a few times, he never changed. Thankfully we all got close to the PMs we were working with and they knew who actually had done the work.
 
I kind of consider it part of the chain of command. His bosses congratulate him, he congratulates you. If it's something you've done and he takes credit for it in front of your peers however, then it's not right.
 
It's not as annoying as the bit that goes hand-in-hand with taking credit when things go right: the bit fact that it's always your fault when things go wrong. And then there's the bit where you finally managed to get their stupid wrong idea to work by changing almost everything, and THEN they take the credit.


To quote someone or other: "There's no limit to what a man can achieve in this world, as long as he doesn't mind who takes the credit".


And yes, welcome to life.

I had a boss in my previous job who took all the credit for what I did and blamed me when his decisions went wrong.

This is one of the many reasons I bailed out!

I have bosses in my current job that take the credit for ideas I have or for work that me and my team have done.

I am not one for blowing my own trumpet but whenever the MD and other execs come round I always tell them how great my team is and what we as a team have achieved.

One of my fav ways of showing the boss up is to bring up the thing they took credit for in front of others, then ask him a question he won't be able to answer. When he stutters for an answer or talks crap they all know the truth.

My supervisor does that to me, but on the other hand my boss calls my supervisor the c-word :p
