Hello chaps,

I've come to dislike my generic office job to the point where I need to resign to stay sane i think! So i'm planning on giving my notice tomorrow, which is a huge risk because I have nothing else lined up. So... i've been thinking about what job I want next.

It can't be an office job. Ideally it want to involve to outdoors, or traveling / driving etc.

I went for an enginering apprenticeship which would have involved traveling around in a blue van fixing boilers etc. Salary 26K. But I just missed out on this one due to an OK interview rather than a good one.

So then I had another idea I was very keen on. Articulated lorry driver. The training costs about £2500 which was fine and the resulting salary is 20K - 30K. I enjoy driving and would love the freedom of being out of the office. Unfortunately I recently found that this one can't happen because one of my eyes is not up to standard (the other one is fine!). Gutted.

So i'm running out of idea now and need some help. Some other ideas i've had are:

Postman - Would enjoy this but can't support myself on 13K
Driving Instructor - £2500 outlay and salary seems to vary a lot 15K to 30K
Multidrop Driver - Only up to 3.5T due to bad eye salary 16K to 18K

Is there anything else I should consider? I don't mind paying up to £2500 training etc if it's worth it. Anything considered as long as it's not office work.

Cheers!!! :)

Hi Pants,

I'm happy to give my advice, but it will help considerably to know how old you are and what education level you've reached - there are so many opportunities, as I am sure you already know :)

You're obviously ready and willing to learn new skills, to improve your employability, so that puts you miles ahead of many others already.

What do you like doing most and hate most in your spare-time ? That can frequently point to a career, in which you'll enjoy working rather than view as a means to an end.

Driving instructors don't generally make much money, that £30K they advertise doesn't usually include the costs of the car or the fees if you've gone through an instructor school/agency.

i currently work in heating but was thinking for this course:

http://www.learndirect-advice.co.uk/helpwithyourcareer/jobprofiles/profiles/profile1456/

have a look c what ya think, £3k the course seems to cost but when people sell these houses this year thay will need someone like u to carry out a home efficency pack, i dont know about salery but it looks like a lot of work should be about!

ps if anyone is one could they please let us know what there on and how investment of these own money was needed.

I'm 23 years old, and have passed A Levels in English Language, ICT, and Electronics. Also have passed various GCSEs. I'm currently a high level complaint handler on a 17K salary.

What i'm interested in:

- Enjoy Driving and being on the road.
- Obsessed with mountain bikes and a keen biker!
- Also quite obsessed with performance cars / racing.
- Interest in electronics / astronomy / anything else involviong gadgets, technology or that is basically a big boys toy. :D

What i'm good at:

- Problem solving / attention to detail / quality of work (borderline perfectionist).
- Handling complaints, controlling difficult conversations, building rapport / good relations with customers. (do not enjoy delaing with difficult customers all day every day however).
- Writing letters to a high professional standard.

What I hate:

- Constant negativity from customers!!!
- Dead end job with no prospects. I need to feel like i'm progressing or bettering myself / my career somehow.
- An unskilled job that would require no brains basically. I want to use my brain, but not nesisarily in an office environment.

Hope that gives a better idea about me. And thats for the comments people, will be looking to any options in the building trade or the interesting suggestion by MagicUK.

Not really what you want to hear, but I wouldn't do that until you have at least decided what you want to do next. Not only will you be impacting your income, but also when you go for another job and they ask what you are doing at the moment it may not look too great to say you quit because you didn't like it and are now unemployed. Sure, depending on the attitude of the employer, and what spin you put on it, it may not be an issue, but I know some people may frown upon it.

also reading the post DO NOT hand in your notice, just grin and bare for the time being till u have something more secure!

If you've done electronics & ICT at A-level & you're interested in technology then why not go for a career in IT? I'd guess something towards networking would be your thing - get yourself some experience and become a contractor then you get a bit of variety, travel to different sites, aren't stuck behind a desk and can pull in a decent income.

I'm sure others on here can advise you better on this area as I work in software so don't know enough about the relevant quals for this (though I'd guess the CISCO stuff is still fairly decent to have)
