The Writers Strike is OVER !!

Excellant new - might get some decent Tv for once over here instead of re-runs of everything :D
This made me laught though "As a result of studio cutbacks, however, many of the writers who went on strike are unlikely to return to the same big-money contracts they'd had as individuals with the studios"
So what was the point of it all ??? (yes, yes I know about the dvd rights etc)

As I understand it, at the moment the writers get nothing extra (or very little) from releases on DVD, on demand etc after the initial TV run - unlike a lot of the other cast/senior crew (directors etc), so effectively it might mean that writers get less up front for sucessful stuff, but end up getting more in the long term.

I think another bone of contention is/was the way writers can get treated - basically the director/producers can alter a script and if the writer objects they can get thrown off the set (or at least that used to be the case at one point not too long ago- i'm not sure if it is at the moment).
 
No it hasn't, but it will hopefully be close, the WGA is supposed to be talking to the AMPTP (producers) today and then voting.

DVD residuals is one part (increasing the % paid to the writer from 0.3% to 0.6%), but also 'new media'. I.e writers aren't paid any residuals for internet, phone releases etc of shows. When VHS came out it was labelled a 'new media' and as such the AMPTP said they would not pay any residuals as there isn't a stable market, they are trying to do the same again with on demand releases (internet, phone etc) even though it is obvious they have already taken off big time. What they want is the same 0.6% for new media distribution as they want for dvd sales.
 
I've been talking to people on the other side of the fence for weeks now about what an end to the strike means for Lost and this is what I have for information:

* It will take 4-6 weeks to get back to actual filming.
* NO discussions have been had regarding the logistics of a return to production.
* The industry is planning on extending the TV season to the end of June.
* If the season is extended a maximum of 6 episodes could be produced.
* Regardless, a minimum of 3 new episodes will be produced.
* There has been NO discussion with regards to whether the un-produced episodes will be made up.
