If its legal to record TV shows, then why is it "illegal" to download recorded tv shows?
EDIT: That wasn't a dig or anything, genuine question.
The issue is basically as follows.
Here in the UK Virgin will have paid a lot of money for this show.
They have exclusive rights to show it in the UK (certainly for the first time around).
Virgin will now try various ways of getting some of the money they have paid for this show back.
The biggest source of income for them will be via advertising.
Sure a lot of people will record the show for personal use and not watch the adverts.
However the vast majority of people will watch the show "live" and will see the adverts.
Maybe only 1% of viewers will see an advert and react to it - that is all they need to make money.
By illegally downloading the show you will not be downloading the adverts.
There is 0% chance of you acting on the adverts because they are not there.
The end result is actually far more reaching than most people understand or want to understand.
However companies will eventually not bother advertising during shows because nobody is seeing the adverts.
This means TV channels will stop buying shows as they cannot make the money back via advertising.
A TV show can only be successful if somebody shows it - so if nobody is buying it then the show will get cancelled.
I know that sounds all very extreme, however when the US started downloading the first series of Battlestar Galactica there was a point where it seemed unlikely we would see a second series.
Not because people didn't like it - but because of the above situation.
Once a show has been aired in the UK once, then it is usually classed as a "free for all".
Sure in an ideal world the tv channel would want people to watch the adverts with every repeat of the show as this is how they get advertisers coming back and spending more money and then the TV channel can afford to keep on buying new shows.
The illegal downloaders of the show of course generally don't see the whole picture and will be at the front of the queue when/if a show is cancelled.
As for this thread being allowed to stay - that is I'm afraid just another example of OcUK's "policy is only policy when we say so".
Although it has been made very clear in the past that this is a UK based site, so we can only discuss music, films & television that have been legally released in the UK, OcUK will just turn a blind eye when it suits them.
We don't turn a blind eye, but we can't be on here 24/7. If you know the rules are being broken, why not use the RTM button (red/white triangle to the left). Big Kev
