So today I got home, and watched Supernatural (tv series) on my launch day 360. This thing has been tremendously loyal to me through the years. I finished watching and then switched the machine off for a bit so I could get some munchies.

An hour later I fired it up to go Laptop hunting in CoD4, except the game hard locked as the mission started. So I rebooted the bugger only to see my first 3 RRoD.:D

I was at first jumping with glee! Then came the sorrow as I realised that my hopes of this being a very long lasting 360 had been dashed. I was expecting it to go in 2008 anyway. So out came the spanner, chainsaw, pillers and cutters and off came the casing to reveal the HEATSINK OF DOOM.

So out came the Vax 2200 Performance vacuum cleaner, a can of Roline Air, a cadburys chocolate finger and lots of pointy things to pry the case open. In short, I cleaned the bugger out good and proper and plonked the 360 onto my desk in all its nekkid glory. I then let it heat up with the RRoD's in place for 15mins, then rebooted the machine....

Yays! I have been huntin for those laptops in irack for the past 2hrs now. Seriously though, I'm torn between getting a new 360 right now. Even Nokkon has tried to talk some sense into me but I'm not sure. I wanted to quit console gaming in 2008 - after playing the only two titles I'm interested in - GTA4 and Condemned 2. Not sure what I'll do just yet but I plan on repairing this bugger over the next week or so. It'll make a good blog article.

Looking at that dust im surprised it didnt die sooner!!! What was the GPU one like?

Mine died for the first time yesterday also.

2 years old on the 20th of January. I had already opened it up beforehand though. Replaced the thermal paste again and didn't do anything so did the towel trick and has been fine ever since!

I'm also toying with the idea to buy a new one, this time an elite. I can get one for £250 from a high street computer store with there price match promise. I saiod to myself that if it red lights again ill buy it!

:D.
You're still mad for opening it up within its 3 year warranty.

i opened mine up to sort the dvd drive out as it was scratching discs  i took some sand paper to it which worked fine, but a month later rrod :o.

i sent it back expecting them to send it straight back as the void sticker was broke, but nope they fitted a new mobo and dvd drive :D.

It's fine atm. After that second pic was taken I played CoD4 for a solid few hours with no issues. I just booted it up as I typed this reply and it booted fine. Right now the top cover is currently off. I'll observe how things go over the weekend.

The GPU had no dust on it at all, I was a bit shocked. I just disconnected the power and mini sata cable, then lifted the dvd drive up and there wasn't a speck of dust. Most of the dust obviously resided within the area covered by the blower. I also found out that my silent DVD drive is a Hitachi-LG thing with a Oct 2005 stamp on it. I'm curious as to how hot the gpu/cpu gets because right now I'm thinking of a custom heatsink combo on both.

Glad to see it's up and running, im sure we are the only two on here with 2 year old xboxs still working!

I may be wrong!

Have you taken the fan duct out? There may be wads of dust around that part, also the fans may be clogged a lil bit :p
Josh

If you look carefully at the folded steel bit that bends over the rear fans/duct in the second pic you'll see it's mangled :p That was me getting angry and taking some pliers to it and bending it horribly back so I could remove the duct/fans :D The fan blades were rather clean with a very thin film of dust and the blower had nothing in it. Both fans are the dreaded Delta's :)

How the hell did you bend it soo much!

All you had to do was place a stanley screwdriver in the middle and wedge it free :p

Gonna see if mines still working...

Josh

I had a mission getting the 360 white casing off at the rear. The side panels were a piece of cake but the rear was a headache. By the time it was off I had little patience. I tried the wedges on the fans but the duct wouldn't come loose so I just ripped the steel plate back :)

Turns out that the bottom of the fans have a small black leg each, that protrude into the 360's lower steel frame, which explains why I couldn't get it loose.

I had major trouble on the rear also the first time i did it!

No guide tell you how to do it properly, i was there forcing and wedging my screwdriver in, i didn't know i just had to insert a screwdriver, one swift whack on the top, POP, and there we go!

*Lets have a toast to dead xboxs living again!* Cheers! hehe...

I think Nismo also has a launch model.
Whatever happened to him? He changed his name from Teletraan-82 back, then stopped posting :(.

My launch died 2 weeks ago :(

I still have it all opened up on my bedroom floor with the DVD drive removed! Did you use just a regular hoover to clean the dust off of the heat sink etc? If so i may try this later and if it works i can have 1 360 for my tv and 1 for my monitor :)
