Ok... it's £4k loan time... new car is on the horizon...

No disrespect but the Clio looks like a boy racers car to me. I see from your profile you are not to far away from the big three zero, do you really want to be driving a cheaply made French car with a big engine?

At 28 surely the worlds your oyster insurance wise.

For me, yup and I do as it fulfills the main criteria for a car for me, it's fun :)

The world is his oyster insurance wise but the 4k budget will be the limiting factor as to what he gets, not the insurance costs :)

It will get better MPG around town than a bigger engine i suppose, offers good power to displacement, easy to tune for bigger power than a bigger NA engine, its just the nature of a turbo engine i suppose, on the motorway at 80 mines in boost.

If the cupra has a 6 speed box it might not be.

boost is not relative to speed. you can be doing 80 on or off boost lol

Yes, i do know its not relative to speed but when you have the cruise contol on going down the motorway at 80 and your either going up a hill or whatever the turbo is at 3k which is within its max boost range, so when the car applys a little bit of power i assume its injecting more fuel than if the turbo was spinning slower, if i drop below 80, say 70 its about 4mpg more efficent, which seems a lot by just knocking off 5mph.

These 1.8T's really are quite rubbish, remind me again what their advantage is versus a larger engine with more cylinders?

I rarely see less than 35mpg driving normally (30,40s + nsl on the way to work) with a bit of hooning. Highest I've seen was 43mpg driving back from Bristol when the we just bought my girlfriend the 205 gti. She was used to a left hand drive, chucking it down and dark so we kept to like 60-65mph most of the way :(

Lowest I've seen is 8 though after a back lane "hoon".

I think they are fairly capable engines, seem to tune well and are pretty quite / smooth.

Wouldnt get a Cupra for 4k, what reg are you going to get for 4k? If you are going to go the loan route can you not warrant a bit more? Personally everything about the Cupra is great but the pre-facelift ones are horrible externally to look at, with the pram style alloys. They just look like an S. Had my FR150 TDi for 2 years and still love it but again its a different car to the Cupra petrol really as its a diesel for a kick off.

Grrr I shouldn't read these threads.. makes me all wishy washy about what I'm going for :p I'm on a 4.5k budget and I keep seeing people post these 2 seaters which I know I shouldn't look at due to impracticality... but meh!

And the other cars that have been listed for £4K aren't ?

The Clio 1*2 gets lots of praise for a reason. Evo rate the 182 as one of the best hot hatches ever made.

first one seems reasonable even tho it wont be a Cupra R with 180 bhp, all depends on that warranty i guess but 3 1/2 yr warranty would be nice

bottom one is one of the cheapest Cupra R 225's ou there atm (note the mileage)

but as long as its been well looked after would be quite happy to do the same again

Sorry can reply now been out. :o

Ok my car is a 1994 GT4 with around 90k on the clock.

First thing first with this car, you WILL need money to maintain it and mod it. I never see above 25mpg even on motorway and at this age they will need consumables. Oil needs changing ever 6k same as any turbo really. The oil I put in costs nearly £50 a bottle, not worth putting cheap stuff in.

Tyres will wear evenly and will last around 10k+ depending upon your driving style.

There are a few main issues with the car, firstly the fig8's can go and these are around £600 listen for a knocking in the suspension. These should be changed around 60k get one with them done. Second problem is the clutch they usually last around 60k and it is an engine out job £400-£600, again get one that is done.

Re the handling I find it good and grippy however it is not a lightweight around 1400kg so don't expect it to be light on its feet. You can however use all the power in all weathers even in the wet it seems reluctant to spin the wheels. A commom mod is an adjustable rear ARB £120 which can be set to suit your handling requirments.

Just be careful when looking at ones that have had the boost increased they like to either crack the block or melt the piston ringlands. 1.1bar is really the max without other mods and I would not personally run 1.1 al the time. However you can run 1.1bar and see 300bhp ish with supporting mods (zorst air filter Etc)

Hope that rambling made sense. :)

None taken of course, but the Clio is widely regarded as one fo the ultimate hot-hatches ever made, pure hot-hatch pedigree, i'd be buying it for the performance and drive I know it gives rather than purely basing a decision on looks.

Problem is that i'd rather pay £1k less for a 2002 model that's done 60k on the clock... or £1k more for a 2003 facelift model that's done £60k. A 2001 plate with £45k isn't exactly worth over £5k imo!:)

You've gotta be kidding me, £110k on an R Cupra, not even any mention opf FSH of what work it's had done? Eek!:D

Hmm I owuldn't say "horrible" personally, especially with a black one, but they're not as pretty. If I did go up to 6k, probably making for a 5k loan and 1k cash, then i'd go for something like this 2003 on the page here, 6th one down in the lovely grey colour http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-u...e=RH19+3RL&radius=100&showMoreOptions=&page=6

Thanks cymatty, very good post. It's actually put me off of the GT4 because I think in the long run it will be too much hassle fro man owners point of view... if I had money to burn then i'd do it in a heartbeat, but I think i'm going to have to be a bit more "sensible" and givet his and the Coop a miss. Cheers again. :)

Why would he be kidding? Mine has done 84,000 miles now, and as soon as the cam chain tensioner has been done, it will keep going for another 80,000 miles easily (so long as its serviced properly).

I love my GT4, but even if you're a bit wary then I wouldn't recommend it - Its a great car but is expensive.

Just upgrading the alloys on a pre-facelift Cupra gives a distinct improvement, mine has facelift alloys and changes the look of the car vastly imho.

Nope, still looks like a base model that someone has stuck cupra alloys on. The only way a normal cupra looks any good is with the facelift bumpers. Even then, it looks too "soft" compared to the "R".
