security alert north sea

Probably some guy left his lunchbox behind a pipe.

I highly doubt a AQ "enemy of peace" managed to board the rig, plant the bomb, get off the rig and have second thoughts and rang in the bomb.....

i swear iv just seen on sky news that it was a hoax??

Sky said:
Workers Flee Oil Rig After Bomb Hoax

A bomb threat that sparked the helicopter evacuation of more than 500 oil workers on a North Sea rig is being treated as a hoax, Sky sources have said.

The rescue operation reportedly followed comments by a woman on the installation.

A bomb disposal unit was on its way to the facility, which is more than 100 miles north-east of Aberdeen.

Jake Molloy, an offshore workers union representative, had been doubtful any explosives could be smuggled onto a rig because of "very, very rigid" security restrictions on the mainland.

The woman, who is a British national and had been working aboard the installation, was detained by the offshore installation manager.

The alert, at 0920 GMT, resulted in 539 people being taken off the Flotel Safe Scandinavia platform.

However, all personnel are now being allowed back on.

Grampian Police said it did not consider that the incident had been terrorist related.

Hope she's made to pay for the cost to the company and the tax payer for this. silly cow.

Well we don't know the circumstances yet. She could have tried to anonymously ring in a bomb scare or she could have just been talking to mates and been obviously joking. If it's anything like the former then yes she should work until she pays that off. Probably be working for the rest of her life but meh :p

If there was really a bomb why would a terrorist tell them that they had planted one?

I wish the military would use some common sense. And it's probably a good idea to buy a boat, because if it was a bomb they would all have been blown up waiting for the helicopters to arrive.

There were three chinooks flying in fixed formation across Newark (My home town) this morning, could this be related I wonder? Must have been around 9'ish as I got woken up by them - terrific sound to be woken up by though.

nope, they were heading to raf Kinloss for the upcoming TLP exercise which starts tomorrow

Still, that's a lot of people on a small platform. How many would normally work a rig?
Depends on the size, but your average platform would have anything upto about 100people on it. Some of the massive platforms can have several hundred people on them.

Smallest permanantly manned platform I've been on had about 33 people on it.

Companies hire these barges to give them extra bed space when they undertake massive construction projects.

I'm not sure about platforms as I've only ever been on one. Most drilling rigs will have 90-120 people on board. These accommodation barges sometimes serve more than one installation if they're close together. For example, you'll often find a drilling rig attached to a platform. The drilling rig drills new wells for the platform to produce whilst it's producing the previous one - or you'll often find several platforms close to each other - or, as Jokester says, if there is major work going on aboard the installation, they'll need many more extra personnel than the installation can handle.

If this turns out to be a hoax, I hope they throw the book at her - life aboard these things is hard enough without some halfwit scaring the crap out of you like this.

Its just been on the Radio now, a 23 year old woman has been flown off the rigs for making a hoax bomb threat.

Bloody women

Why they on rigs anyway!

Edit: I hope they hand her the bill for stopping operations and the scrambling of 14 choppers.

REALLY ****** me off.

How long was work stopped for? No doubt they lost several hundred thousand in lost revenue, let along the cost of the choppers. Silly b****
