They are either just bad ports from their DVD counterparts or they are just bad quality in general.

Grain is inherant to film - upping the resolution won't remove the grain.

The increased resolution and bit rate will help reduce picture noise though.

You realise that blurays resolution is vastly below film ?

Films are made with grain or on grainy film on purpose

I never said any different.

The reduction in noise going from dvd to blu ray doesn't affect the grain because all film inherently has it to various extents depending on the stock used. So when people say blu ray is clearer its due to reduction in noise rather than lack of grain.

You said 'upping the resolution' in relation to the film - bluray process ???

If a film has grain it has grain on dvd or on bluray.

Bluray is clearer due to resolution and larger DOF, there shouldn't be noise on a DVD - macroblocking etc yes.

Because for artistic reasons the movie director/producer decided to film the movie on fast grainy film. The blu-ray port's should be fairly true to the original, although blue ray is still only a fraction of film resolution, its still high enough that it will be more "true" to the films original grain level.

The lower resolution of DVD compared to Blu-Ray probably means that some of the grain is lost because its actually below DVD's resolution to fully resolve the finer details, and what's left is probably filtered out by noise reduction.

The grain is often intended to be there, many films are given an artistic effect from it being there. No other reason than that.

And this is what will stop HDM becoming the norm. People don't want to upgrade to find grain that they couldn't see with DVD.

I found it annoying, setting sharpness to the right level should help though.

Most of the time its how its mean't to be eg Band of Brothers on DVD its very grainy on scenes if it looked pin sharp clear it would artifical

War of the World (2005) looks pretty grainy, the Director wanted it to look that way, Miami Vice was similar from memory.

And 300 had the look of grain digitally added afterwards.

Grain helps with CGI movies, otherwise you get some horrible effects like seeing the actors obviously in front of a blue screen.

King Kong is good evidence of this, on the hd-dvd, you lose the realism because it just looks like people jumping in front of a screen with stuff on the back.

For me, not at all because HD is noticeably better quality, grain or no grain
