"Three teenagers have been jailed for life for murdering father-of-three Garry Newlove, who was kicked to death outside his home. "

Good!

Ironically something similarly annoying happened near me (the guy who got hit with stones/other missiles and abused while playing cricket with his son). Because the guy died of a heart attack, the thugs were judged to be blameless and got away with slapped wrists :(

While it's good they have been brought to justice, the title claims they have been given life, yet;

Adam Swellings, of Meredith Street, Crewe, received a minimum 17-year term; Stephen Sorton, of Honister Street, Warrington, was ordered to serve a minimum 15 years and Jordan Cunliffe, formerly of Rowland Close, Warrington, must stay in jail for at least 12 years.

That's to do with causation.

Anyway, the main case sounds deserved.

Scum, they should change life to "10-15 years on good behaviour" life its a mockery.

I bet they thought they where big and 'ard when they drank all that alcohol and went on the rampage, I bet they are crying like little girls now.

Such a shame Garry Newlove family have to live there LIFE without a dad and husband.

you know people can change over time. locking them up for infinity wouldnt be the answer. 12 years? they probably wont do half that time. it needs to take them until they have reached half of their life expectancy.

its slightly better than the guys who got minimal sentences, those two little ***** who tormented the guy out of one house, found his new place, broke in and vandalised the place, beat him on several occasions i think before the last time they beat him to an inch of his life and threw him in a river. they got reduced sentences as they "didn't realise it would kill him", which is a complete cop out.

A guy who has a heart attack because people are attacking him which would cause adrenaline and stress, clearly they caused the heart attack, in the states i'm pretty sure they wouldn't get done for 1st or even 2nd degree, but manslaughter or something as what they did led to his death even if not directly.

this is the other thing, maybe bad lawyers? as with everything else in the uk, education is going down the tubes, becoming a doctor is easier than ever, if thats getting easier, you can bet becoming a lawyer and everything else is. to be fair i'm not 100% sure about the uk but in the states they will pleabargin for lesser charges. IE if you charge them with 1st degree, and evidence just can't prove it they get off, however you might have enough evidence for manslaughter, so if you start off charging with that you get the conviction.

Maybe they tried to prosecute for murder without the evidence, when manslaughter or something was a safer bet and they would have been done for that. on a second count of crappy lawyers, surely a great lawyer would get them convicted in that case, and a crappy one couldn't. Though a murder trial, the real money is in corporate law and sueing big companies with deep pockets, so the best lawyers are probably not in the jobs to win these cases.

Life sentences aren't life sentences, and reducing all the time as, while crime rates rise, and more people need to go to jail with no sign of that turning around if they sentence everyone to 50 years now, in 25 years the prison system will completely fail, they let people out early now because they have no space. If they just made it an industry, people in prison work, provide a service that would otherwise cost tax payers wages to other workers. We have an entire workforce sitting bored for decades who could all be working and covering all the costs of their jail term. at the moment they are a drain on the tax payers, why not stop it. or, you know give them a parachute and drop them off over australia :p

Annoyingly...the Times says of Swellings:

The Times said:
The teenager had consumed four litres of cider and smoked five cannabis joints that night, paid for with his dole money.

totally agree with the "life means life" sentiment too.
