8GB Info

I've not read that before so thanks.

The author has made some good points. Makes me question if I want to go down the 64-bit route as planned when my 4GB of RAM arrives. From what he says then no, I should stick with 32-bit and live with the 3.2/3.5GB of recognised RAM as the system would only be using the same amount anyway.

Does he actually show any data? Had a quick flick through and he says yes its all very nice using 64bit vista with lots of RAM, superfetch rocks and if you have a few very large programs running you should notice some benefits, but he never compares 4 vs 8GBs as far as I read before I got bored of my horribly slow internet.

He's got a graph showing at:

4096MB 64-bit Vista system memory uses 757MB where as at 3581MB in 32-bit Vista system memory uses 549MB.

The other memory levels also show that more memory is taken by Vista in 64-bit over the 32-bit.

He claims that once you've taken off the system memory and the extra memory programs take because they're running in 64-bit over 32-bit the remaining memory is about the same.

We can also see that the 64 bit versions take up quite a bit more memory as well. Again, the explanation is very simple. All of the variables are no longer only 32 bits long, but 64 bits instead. Typically, this makes applications between 20 % and 40 % larger, which consequently results in a higher memory footprint as well. File formats such as music files or videos are not affected by this.

The upshot is that it doesn’t make sense to install a 64 bit version of Vista in order to better utilize 4 GB of memory simply because the 32 bit version would only recognize 3.5 GB. The problem is that while it is true that you would “gain” the missing memory, you would also immediately lose it to the system due to the 64 bit version’s larger memory footprint. Thus, using a 64 bit version really only makes sense with larger memory sizes.

Wierd, i always thought moving to vista once i had 4GB would be a smart move because of the extra ram that could be used
appears not especially with DX10 running terribly and the apparant slow down with Vista

Vista uses RAM much more intelligently than XP though, instead of leaving it free it will take unused RAM and cache programs too it, speeding up app opening times significantly.

Vista is almost on a par now with XP in terms of gaming speed too.

Those graphs are nice and informative, but the whole article doesn't actually mention when you see any benefit using 8GBs (apart from showing that when you fill up your available RAM you start paging - not exactly a new discovery), or how much benefit it brings to these situations.

I have 4GB and have never seen Vista use more than about 60% of it, so if I upgraded to 8GB I doubt I'd ever notice.

Now if you're using large photoshop files then I can see you'll benefit there, but that must be a tiny proportion of PC users.

The reason I was interested by the article is because a large amount of this community will be using 4GB now or soon and so picking between 64-bit and 32-bit OS is a hard choice, especially with his results.

Backwards compatibility is a major area. Drivers, programs, games, etc.

For a gamer whos heard mixed feelings I want to make sure my OS will work. If 64-bit will have no benefit with my spec why would I want to choose 64-bit with possible driver/gaming problems over 32-bit?

Thanks.

Then hear different.. I've been running Vista 64 since October with no problems whatsoever. In fact, I'd go as far as saying it's far more stable then XP was. You may have to search for driver updates, patches and updates for your software but this shouldn't be an issue.

I've had no problems running older games either. I've tested both HL1 and RTCW and both work fine.

There's no reason to get 32bit Vista if your hardware supports 64bit. Even looking at these results.

Spot on, I'm of the school of thought that MS should not have bothered with 32 bit on Vista. Its just served to confuse people, the amount of people that compare the Vista 32/64 situation to XP 32/64 is large and I find peoples view of Vista 64 bit is tainted becuase of this.

MS bothered with 32 bit Vista so they could sell it to those people who buy £400 machines from tescos etc.
I wouldn't mind betting that's the large majority of PC users.
We seem to forget on these forums we are in a minority compared with the amount of people that buy PCs.

I had to go fix a Vista PC with 512 ram (and some of that went to on-board graphics)
It was OK to start with, but once she had installed a few programs it crawled.

We seem to be in a unique situation at the moment. When in the past was buying more ram that your OS could handle was cheaper than the OS itself?
I'm referring to 4 gig in 32 bit vista.

These machines would have been EMT64 capable for some time, but I know where you are coming from as some Intel notebooks chips got EMT64 support very late on.

Would like to know how many people spending £400 on a pc will go out and buy a retail copy of vista (or even an OEM)?

i have just ordered another 4 gig off ram to move to 8 gig just to see if there is any benefit for me , i find that that my machine is pretty unresponsive for the first three or four minutes after booting up ( it won't even load firefox ) until it stops accessing the hard drive . and according to the task manager i have only 350 mb off ram free , ram is so cheap at the mo especially with free delivery at ocuk this week why not .
