hey all, slight accident with me incorrectly thinking i'd unplugged my psu. a few singed eyebrows later and it looks like i need a new pc.

i can't justify spending much at the moment as i've a few things to save for but i reckon i could take a £350ish hit before payday. I haven't played pc games for a few years but wouldn't mind something that could run currentish ones on non awful settings (1366x768) medium detail kind of thing non of the fancy extras turned on. in a month or two i'll have a bit more cash to spend but will probably give this build to my brother, so not really looking for parts just to suffice until the upgrade.

I don't need... O/S, monitor, speakers, soundcard, keyboard + mouse, dvd rewriter, floppy drive.

Do need a new case though.

cheers for any advice.

Slight accident? Sounds intriguing.

Anyway, this ought to fit the requirements, you've got a fairly decent graphics card and a CPU that will overclock quite nicely plus you could easily upgrade further if you felt like it.

drop some ram if you dont need 4GB

does 16mb make much of a difference compared to 8mb? i have a WD Caviar 16mb sata II which is the same price as that hitachi so wouldnt he be better getting that?

I think it is a couple of quid more at the moment but the WD is the better drive, not really because of the cache though. Mainly because it is slightly newer and faster from advances in drive technology.

The difference between 2mb and 8mb cache is noticeable (I found) but the difference between 8mb and 16mb much less so and I'd expect similar from 16mb to 32mb.

not a problem, i have a retail copy that i bought and then realised that there was no chance of my amd 3000 with 1gb of ram surviving if it was installed. didn't know they were so strict with their oem rights management though!

thans for the specs guys, i think i will go for 2gb of ram initially and upgrade as needed. I will probably also look in members market for parts but as i'd prefer brand new you've given me the perfect base to work from.
