PS3 Reaches milestone quicker than the PS2

Sony has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that the PlayStation 3 has sold over one million units in the UK.

The console was released in the UK on March 23 last year, meaning it has reached the milestone quicker than the PlayStation 2, which took 50 weeks to sell one million units.

Sony announced back in June 2007 that sales had hit the one million mark across the whole of Europe in just nine and a half weeks. With sales of the most expensive home console reaching important milestones for Sony, publishers are becoming more confident in the format.

Last week, Electronic Arts stated that it expects the PS3 to outsell the Xbox 360 this year, clocking up between 5 and 6 million units in Europe and up to another 5.5 million units in North America. Nintendo's Wii reached the one million mark in the UK within 38 weeks on sale, making it the fastest-selling home console in the region.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 sold one million units within 60 weeks.

Probably a lot to do with video games being more popular now compared to when the PS2 was released as they (imo) both had poor games on launch.

As for the 360, hardly surprising is it? Everyone knew the PS3 would sell faster due to the PS2 being so popular. 360 also had supply problems early on iirc, they were sold out for quite a while (don't think as many were manufactored as the PS3).

People who wern't into the XBOX will have taken time to come round to the idea of a 360. Second year sales might be a better judge.

Awaits fanboy comments "360 would have sold more if more was available".

grabs popcorn.

To be fair no one expected the 360 to get anywhere near the ps3. The playstation brand is so huge that even with the **** launch titles it still outsold the 360. Kinda shows you what idiots bought the thing at launch. :D

I hoped the 360 brand could fight alongside it for longer just to increase competition and to increase the quality of titles.

The irony is, the 360 actually did launch at only 50 thousand units. Nonetheless, the PS3 selling faster than the PS2 is nothing to sniff at, and pretty much everyone who said it had a slow first year and bad sales are wrong. The numbers are there. I fully expect the PS3 to pull ahead of the 360 by the end of next year.

People caught on that its the cheapest Blu-Ray player to buy and one of the best/cost effective media centres to get and since HD-DVD is going down the shoot, im not surprised. Good show i say.

Yep, Sony's strategy worked well - make sure that blu-ray will be the new format of choice, and the PS3 being the flag carrier for it will go far. They did it for PS2 and they done it for PS3, just with a little bit of competition this time around.

I couldn't give a **** how many consoles either the 360 or PS3 sell as long as i get some good games to play :D

I don't understand why so many people(fangirls) get thrills from console sales ;):p

PS2 did not really set record sales either though, until the modchips appeared :) So not so sure why this means anything much.

The PS2 ended up being one of the most successful consoles in history with 120 million consoles sold to date. The PS3 doing better than the PS2 in its first year despite a relative lack of games and a high price point is sure to turn heads.
