Right I've got a 1.4 clio and it seems to be getting through oil. I have to top it up what seems like every few months, and by top up I mean completely refill.

I do a lot of stop start driving in town (5 min journeys), will this play a part?

If not, what other issues could I be looking at other than a leak

Cheers

Piston rings could be failing.
Also, do you rag the car a lot when it is cold? If so, this could be using oil up. Stop-start driving does use more oil than if you were just on the motorway, but not anywhere near as much as using around 3-4litres of oil every few months.

Are the exhaust fumes blueish in colour? Have you checked your engine bay thoroughly to see if there is any oil stains in there?

This might be a long shot, but it could also be your oil filler cap not being tight enough/the seal has degraded.

almost every few months? lol

how many miles you putting on it. if youre doing 200 miles in 3-4 months and it loses 4-5 litres then you have a problem... otherwsie youll need to be a bit more specific for anyone to make sense of it

No signs of HGF, and I do try and drive reasonably sensibly until its warmed up. I cant see any signs of leaks, under the car is fine. Dont think theres any blue smoke, but cant say i can see from the drivers seat, will check that.

Put it this way, I've got one of those big oil containers you can buy from petrol stationsm the £20+ jobbies (not sure of litres), and thats nearly been used up in since october/november.....I've probably done say 2000+ miles in that time, mainly stop start but a few long motorway runs
