23 drum outtakes from John Bonham (Led Zepplin) as posted on the V-Drums forum:

Listening to some Nightwish in the car on the way in, something struck me just how good those outtakes are in terms of everything. I can hear some of the mistakes and loss of 'feel' for example but the rest of the outtake are fantastic.

I think #11 is a favourite as you can hear the snare pattern really well. I love the feel that #2 has later in when he gets into the groove it's almost like a steam train.

Can't listen to the files now, at work

Bonham had a style that was very new for the time, combining shuffle and more gentle grooves with heavy rock.
Whilst most of his stuff is pretty simple to play, imitating that relaxed and syncopated feel is quite hard, Rock and Roll is one of my favourite songs, as
its 100% Bonham drumming at its best, in my opinion, the fills and breakdowns are so smooth..

I had these yeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaars ago but ironically I gave them to our drummer last week.
We played some of them over a 4000 watt rig just to hear how amazing he was.

Some of us youngsters are just discovering them now :p :D

I shall be loading these up tonight on my iPod, picking up my sticks and wailing on my vdrums - feeling like a total novice.

Seriously though, I'm only just beginning to understand how good Bonham was. My favourite track at the moment is Four Sticks.

These tracks will hammer home just how good he was.
Its one thing listening to a drummer with a band but listening to a drummer on his own can really show how good they are and I'm not talking about drum solos either.

I couldn't get why he was so good for a long time. I've only started to listen to Zep recently and I couldn't see the fuss.

But then, when I started to listen to it I started to get it. He just had "the groove". Which is rare, even now.

Hehe well I've just spent the last few hours banging along .. man I feel pumped :)

I've managed to get a nice grooving beat out of it.. although there's a huge difference between the vdrum sound and the 'phat' sound from his ludwig with the bass playing behind :/
Found the Bonham shuffle hard. I can either get the snare+bd or the cymbal+snare but not all three :(
