<holds head in hand>

this is the second time I've got a PS3 and after 2 days of solid playing it's the second time I feel I've made a mistake, it won't be going back this time though as I need it for a blu-ray player, anyway I've tried my hardest, the machine in general is great, it looks nice, it practically silent, I love the PS3's XMB, very simple and intuitive, I also love the PSN store being 'exterior', it's something that I can log into away from the XMB, it makes my console feel like mine and not an expensive animated billboard, I love the quality of the audio, definitely better than the 360's, I even like the browser with the cool multi-page function that you stack and switch web pages using you trigger's on the controller, and blu-ray, who can deny that it isn't a fantastic feature to have to take advantage of the big screen plasma's/lcd's, or even projectors that are getting cheaper by the day,

so all that said whats wrong ?

The controller :(, seriously seriously seriously it is the worst thing I've held in my hand EVER, the only way I can describe it is like this, when I'm playing a game with it feels like I'm patting my head and rubbing my tummy at the same time, it's just wrong, it feels completely unnatural, everything about it is wrong, it's the most unergonomic thing that has graced my hand, it's such a shame it really is, games that can be played just using the d-pad and the triangle, square, x and circle, ok, then it's fine, thats what made the original PS1 pad great but that was over ten years ago, slapping a couple of analogue sticks on the front and the worst triggers in history on the back just doesn't cut it, look how much the actual consoles themselves have evolved, why not the pad ?, I honestly sit here now after playing the ps3 most of the night and my hands feel strange and I know it's becuase I forceing them into wierd postions all the time to keep the pad from slipping out my hand, ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, oh well 360 back again next week,

:(

/rant.

I totally agree, Ive talked to some people who only play PS about this and they insist you just have to get used to using the sticks with the middle of your thumb instead of the end. I think thats madness, its plain to see when you hold a 360 pad that it covering most of your palm but when I hold a PS pad, most of my palm isn't being used.

On to the triggers, they aren't concave so your fingers can slip of them it makes driving games very tiresome. Plus they feel way too spongey no smooth action on them like 360 or GC.

The lack of rumble too is annoying. I mean now I gotta re buy the controller ?! madness. Its weight is obviously user preference and I don't really mind it being light, but the seem where it has been screwed together has too big a gap making it quite rough.

Positives, its battery seems good, bumper buttons are nicer to press than 360. Analogues are smoother imo and I like the idea of pressure sensitive buttons though this is a ps2 feature.

I agree. The standard PS3 controller (imo) sucks!!!

The triggers suck. THe position of the analogues is unatural. I never realised how much I love rumble until I suddenly didn't have it. The controllers feel light and cheap.

I don't actually own a PS3 by the way but play on one most days at work.

no probs here, i use both 360 and ps3 pads all the time, i do have smaller hands if thats anything to do with it, but have no issue's with either. Have you thought about using a 3rd party controller?

I don't agree. The Playstation pad has been around for decades and the tries & tested design has hardly changed at all. The pad is a classic design and for me has not been beaten by any controller.

The new ps3 pad is excellent and very light due to no rumble and no batterys. I personally like it with the lightness making it easier to use the sixaxis. It only feels cheap due to the lightness but I think it's a quality controller.

If your going to give up on a excellent console just because of the controller then your obviously not that impressed with it. Give it time and you will get used to it.:)

You know a few weeks I would have agreed completely with you. I even sold my launch day PS3 after a few weeks because I had SIXAXIS rage. I bought a second PS3 in November and imported a DualShock 3 from Japan. Although the design is the same, the build quality is so much better. I've grown used to it and even when I go back to the SIXAXIS for non-rumble games I feel comfortable with it. I even think the triggers are better. When you rapidly pull the 360 trigger, it feels to me the pad is not picking up every one of those pulls. The PS3 pad registers every single pull though.

I would say to you not to give up yet. 2 days may not be enough. 2 weeks might be.

mmmmmm I really don't know mate, when I pull those triggers with my thumbs resting on the analogue sticks it just feels soooooooooooooooo wrong, the pad just wants to keep slipping back, it's even worse when your hands become sweaty.

There has to be a way to get the 360 pad to work on the ps3, there has to be, whats is actually technically stopping it from working on there atm ?

the 360 pads are RF wireless arent they? the p3 pads are bluetooth, obviously. the only way around that is a wired pad but even then.....drivers will kill that idea dead.

I love the PlayStation pad, always have.
I think it's really comfortable and well designed!
One thing I really don't understand is the moaning about the trigger buttons, I've had my PS3 for about six months now and there's not been a single occasion when my finger has slipped off?

you must have pixie hands then lol

What I would like to know is, how come a lot of forum users bemoan the fact that they can't use the PS3 controller but somehow magically were able to use the same controller during the PS2 days.

Seems to me some people just can't help but find something to cry about in regards to the PS3. Also I am sure many here owned the original playstation aswell, well its still the same controller practically.

Seems to smell a little of hypocrisy.

not from me, the shoulder buttons on the ps2/ps1 pads were fine. and while the sticks arent in the best place, they arent that bad. it has to be said they do give me thumb ache after a while, just like my psp does.

Shoulder buttons on the PS2 pad were fine, and I never used the analogue sticks on the PS2. Now that I DO use analogue sticks for games, it is unnatural to have them placed where they are,

you really want to know why that is, the triggers, it's that simple, I have no problem with the ps2 pad, yeah I still preferred the xbox controller but I could still use the ps2 pad no problem, the problem comes when you have to exert pressure onto the triggers, it changes the whole feel of the pad in your hand, it makes it unbalanced.

I have bought the ps console of each generation last. I put up with the odd control pad to play the exclusives. Ive always thought he sticks were in the wrong place. Last gen I was always a big supporter of the GC pad, this gen I think the 360 has the best pad. I think Next gen if MS can tweak out the flaws of the 360 pad then they will have the ultimate pad.

Another thing I will say that is good about the ps pad is the six axis functionality works a lot better than I was led to believe. In flow its flawless, I think sony should push this more and make some crappy wii like games and they would definitely sell a few more consoles.

It just seems odd that the sticks that were obviously added in those position because it was an upgrade to the PS1 pad are still in the gaffa taped on position. Especially now that hardly any games uses D pad as primary control.

My only (and in fairness limited) play on the PS3 i had similar probelms at a mates house (playing it a lot last night COD4), i had a problem or running around and using the other buttons, and i have small hands, it was like i had to move my entire hand instead on just moving my fingers while my palm should be rested in the grip......if that makes any sence?

agreed.

The PS1 pad was the king digital pad but after that it started to go down hill, it's funny, all these years later and on the PS3 I'm still trying to setup my games so I can use my sixaxis pad like a PS1 pad lol.
