Ok! So it seems I maybe going for the Nikon D40X!
I found a package that has the camera and a lens for £340 all in.

The lens is a "Nikkor 18-55". Is that a typo? Or is there such a thing as "Nikkor"?

And is this lens motorised?

And finally is it any good?

Sorry for too many questions, but thanks for your help in advance :)

Nikkor are Nikon's lens brand name from what I gather.

If it's a D40X kit, it should be an AF-S or AF-I lens, which means it will be motorized due to being an Auto Focus lens. :)

Nope, Nikkor isn't a typo. Nikkor is the name Nikon use for their lenses. Its a AF-S lens so it will autofocus fine with the D40X and yes its pretty decent. Its the kit I started off with and I was/am very happy with it. :)

Excellent, thanks guys :)

Although I was told that this particular shop was stopping the D40X to make way for the D60.

You reckon it would be worth paying an extra 100 quid or so and waiting for the D60?

In my opinion... Nope. If I was looking at £440ish for a D60, I would save a tiny bit more and get a second hand D80 or D200 (The D200 is going for less than £500 second hand now)

Could not agree more!

I have a D40 and have to say that you should just buy the D40x and then decide to upgrade at a later date. You want to learn from the camera and find its restrictions and then buy based on them. It could be that a D40x will be your camera for life, or it could be that you outgrow it. I am nowhere near outgrowing mine and can see myself having it for quite some time before upgrading. As for the 18-55 Nikkor, I am amazed at its clarity ... if you look at my photostream on Flickr www.flickr.com/photos/martinturner the later 20 have all been taken with that lens. A good example of how sharp it can be is of the second image of the eye. I somehow had the ISO set to auto and it bizarrely chose ISO800 so was expecting a lot of noise, but tbh was quite surprised.

Lastly, if budget is tight do not stretch to the better camera as you will be wanting accessories once you have the camera. Lenses will cost you more than the camera itself and of which you can take with you if you do upgrade. Then there are spare batteries, tripod, filters, a good bag ... it all adds up and very quickly!! :)

Yeah it really REALLY is worth avoid the D40/D60. You'll only end up wanting to upgrade.
The D80 is great.

That is complete nonsense!

Its all very well going for a mid level camera for the sake of it, when far too many with them have not got a clue how to compose a decent photo. Seriously, unless you already a pretty clued into the technical side of photography a D40/D40x or D60 would be a great first camera. How about the thousands who buy a D40 and never upgrade? Until you reach a camera's limitations you are best not overspending. Besides, depreciations on cameras are not that bad so you can always sell second hand. Plus, a lot will keep the D40/D40x as a second camera when they do upgrade.

EDIT: Actually the D60 being that more expensive is not really worth it. Given you can buy a D40 for under £300 and the D40x for a little over, its hardly throwing money away is it.

Once again! Many thanks MK and everyone!
(Btw congratulations on winning that cash prize MK :))

It seems this particular shop has no more D40X's due to the D60 being released soon :(

Do you guys think that the D40X will come down in price once the D60 hits the scene?

Also, martin, thanks for your input as well, what you said made perfect sense.

Thanks. No cash prize yet. That comes when I win. ;) Ther D40X might come down in price, but I wouldn't worry about it as if you play that game you will always be waiting for stuff to be released or drop in price. If you want it and can afford it now, then get it.

And yes that was photoshoped. Its called 'selective colouring'. Fairly simple to do with a bit of photoshop magic. :)

Yep, thats a relatively easy thing to do in PS. select the are to keep the colours, then click invert. then ctrl+u. Also looks brilliant with portrates using it on eyes, also done a few when on peoples sunglass' reflection. The more subtle the better

The D40(x) is a brilliant camera, and at the time was the only thing I could afford, and in no way do I regret buying it, as it has taught me a lot about the skills involved in taking photos etc. However now I feel slightly limited by the lack of cheap AF-S lens' and the price difference between a D80 and a d40 vs the price between AF-s lens' and the Normal AF lens' it now makes sense to get the slightly more expencive body now that it has dropped in price so much.

I have not had any problems with the AF-S or Sigma HSM lens restriction. I picked up a 70-200VR AF-S for £100 and a 10-20 HSM Sigma (wide angle) for £200. The wide angle is pretty much the favoured lens.

Even the most two popular macro lenses 105 or 150 Sigma's are surely going to be an alternative purchase - both of which have motors in them? So other than 'what you have heard on the grapevine' - how has the restriction actually affected you. And by that I mean someone who is starting out in manual DSLR photography? rather than someone with years of experience, who actually would opt for a much better camera than a D80?

To be honest, you have to question what additional lenses have you bought (other than the 50mm prime) that you would have been restricted if you had a D40x?

When you start reaching MK's level of technical ability and there aren't many here who have, its only at that stage that I personally think you would start to buy lenses which you may deem unworthy for a D40, but then at that stage you would be look D200 upwards?

Cavallino - I know you are ideally after a D40x, but a high street catalogue store has a D40 going for £279.99 which is pretty good. Depends if you want the mega pixels? Did not find they made a slightest bit of difference when I was making the choice.

Hmm interesting.
Apart from the MP difference, what other differences are there between the D40 and D40X?

Was that price including a Nikkor lens?

That price includes the 18-55 Nikkor kit lens (the one I have used for most of my shots). I have recently bought a 10-20 wide angle and a zoom, but am yet to use them. Join flickr and add me as a contact if you want.

Differences - i did have a breakdown, although its mainly megapixels.

10 megapixel sensor
Lower base sensitivity (ISO 100 vs ISO 200)
Auto ISO option includes ISO 200
Faster continuous shooting (3 fps vs. 2.5 fps)*

Reviews - may help in finding differences
