My fish tank

Yeh it has been cycled with out the fish in ive had the tank awhile just ive only had the fish in for about a month. I think it was my fault it died due to me turning the second pump/filter off. it only came with a crappy pump/undergravel tray system but ive put another pump in thats got cartrage filters on and i turned that one off thinking the undergravel one will be enough but the next morning i came down and most the fish were gasping at the top and the glowlight was dead so i put it back on and they have been fine since and that was about 2 weeks ago :) As for the bridge that is on my to do list, im thinking of getting 2 hollowed plastic logs for them to hide in as one of the glowlights has decided the bridge is his hiding place and he fights the other of if they come near it :D thanx for the replies though chaps

you say you have had the tanik under a month and have had a fish die, have you cycled your tank yet? If not then this could explain your death and could lead to more!

just use a gravel vac from your local fish shop :) never, ever wash your filter sponges in tap water as this will kill the bacteria that keep the tank clean! a dirty filter is a happy filter as they say :)

Nice tank the Panda Corydoras are very cool although your one looks like its tail has been nibbled on. Your "Marble Loach" is a Chinese sucking loach/ plain algae eater (2 common names for them) watch out because they can grow fairly big (i.e. to big for your tank) and can become territorial. In your tank you might only end up with one if you catch my drift (possibility). Ottocinclus would be good algae eaters for you as they don't grow so big. Some Amano Plant shrimps (japonica something = latin name) would also be cool in there and they don't really add any load to your tank.

And as you have got a undergravel filter, i.e. no sponges, only do about half of your gravel at a time, with a gravel cleaner as you want to keep traces of the bacteria in there for the filtration. However do keep it clean as "corys" (your catfish) are known to damage their barbels on stones and if constantly near "dirty" gravel this can lead to infection and so forth.

Also might be an idea with your undergravel filter to keep using a bacterial suppliment to help keep your filter bacteria topped up (like yakult ;))
some brands for this are:
Bacterlife (good value for money)
Stress Zyme
Cycle
Safestart

Just an idea.
I might get working on a thread for fishkeeping etc as i know there are a few people here that keep them.

Aero (works in an Aquatics shop thus job title = Professional Fisherman :D)

Ive always been interested in a fishtank for my sitting room, should make a complete beginners part if you ever get around to doing it.

Yer then I could direct people who come into work to the OC website and save myself about 10 speeches to people every weekend :D

nice but impractical to clean you'd have to use an air powered gravel filter and if the water quality was poor you'd be able to smell it :P (ammonia)

Yeah I am using Co2 as well as ferts. Also a huge amount of light over a 11 hour period each day.

Additionally, around 50% water change each week. The wood is a year old and still leaching tannins - although only very slightly.

nice, after a co2 kit myself - either a JBL one or a D-D compressed one. only got 1WPG light though and cannot see how you can upgrade the standard juwel lighting :( may just change lighting to 11 hours a day and replace the standard juwel tubes :s

what ferts are you using?

You running T8 tubes? Juwel now do T5 lighting units which can help a lot! Additionally you can get a 3 flap set for the top which lets you use two lighting units. 4 T5 tubes under the hood should give you plenty of light.

I think the light unit is about £60 and the tubes about £25 each depending on size. The 3 flap set if £16 ish.

Then of course there's Co2 and you realise that this really can become an expensive hobby.

As for ferts, I use Flourish Excel and Flourish Iron. I don't use undergravel ferts at all, and as my pics show, it's not really needed.

Good lighting, Co2 and Liquid Ferts should see you with a well planted tank.

i have two tanks a 6ft and a 4ft tank with Malawi cichlids in and a rather big pond with mostly Koi in :) i'll have to find the pics of my tank and upload them again :)

running 2 x T5 tubes. do they make the lightunits for the trigon 190, or do you think i should just replace the tubes with some better ones?

i have been using flourish excel, will get some of this iron stuff too.

This is what my stepdad started out with. Basically the same size as yours.

Then he went for an upgrade literally a few days after.

Then another upgrade followed.
