I nice chappy from the beeb has been to Sony UK and was allowed to play with the new Play TV add on for the PS3.

The highlight of this article is the forthcoming functionality to allow TV to be recorded whilst you are playing games etc :eek:

Basically you can indeed turn your PS3 in to a fully functioning PVR. Of course you may need a bigger HD drive. Some might say "a HD + Play TV is dearer than a standalone PVR" - you will be right but this is cool for an all-in-one solution and for pople who dont like stacks of boxes under the telly. You need to factor in the sling box like functionality with the PSP too. No doubt you can set recordings remotely with the PSP too :)

Sounds interesting, but I am sure it will be way overpriced for what it is, although I guess you are paying for the privilege of it being all in one.

Even though my HDTV has Freeview in and I have Sky, I could almost see myself getting this just for the PSP functionality. All depends on the pricing though.

Yep I've decided I'll pay no more than £60 for it, so if its over that they won't be getting a sale out of me :)

I paid £200 for my dual tuner PVR.
Mind you, that was two and a half years ago.

If the PS3 version allows you to do things like stream TV/recorded programs to the PSP, and of course, copy recorded programmes off the PS3 to USB key/HDD, then those are some pretty desirable extra features for a PVR.

My Topfield PVR allows me to copy programmes off its (160gb) HDD to the PC, so I can burn to DVD etc, with no loss. It's invaluable.

Assuming the PS3 PlayTV is HD ready as well, assuming Freeview ever gets HD content, then it would be well worth the money.

I could have done with this contraption last night. There was something on BBC Learning Zone on BBC2 that I wanted to record. I really hope you can copy off the recorded programmes on to a memory stick or HDD but I can't see that happnening without DRM. The programmes will be all over the Internet in minutes of airing!

EDIT: Just watched the video on the web page. I want it now! LOL.

My PVR died a couple of days ago, and I'm getting the Play TV instead. Just wish it would hurry up as at the moment I'm having to make do with a old Humax single tuner which is rubbish :(

Most decent PVR's still retail at £100 so even at that price I'll opt for this as I can upgrade the HDD when needed :)
 
Looks cool and will definately solve my dilemma of not being able to watch the F1 when the main TV's in use. I bought one of those PSP docks with the extra speakers so I can use it like a little TV along with Play TV.

One thing I wasn't happy about was how long it took to load play tv in that video. took bleeding ages - hope they fix that before general release!!!

That's exactly what I can do with my PVR.
It connects to the PC, and I can just copy the recorded files straight off the PVR to the PC, with no loss.

Therefore I can either edit out any ads, and burn the MPEG2 to dvd, or run through an XVID encoder.

No DRM, freeview isn't encrypted.
It's the reason I chose this PVR at the time.
So when something really good comes on, I can keep it.

I'd assume part of the beauty of the PS3 system is that it could offer this same functionality. Copy recorded programmes to memory stick/USB HDD. Why not?

Apart from being able to archive stuff I want to keep, or record an entire series of something before I start to watch it, and keep it on the PC to stream, it also means you can lend people a copy, like you could with video tapes. If my Mother wants to see something I've recorded, I just copy the programme off the PVR to my PC, crop it down, and burn to a DVDRW so she can borrow it.

As I say, all with no loss, like you'd get by connecting an analogue connected standalone DVD recorder.

PVRs are great.
Once you get used to them, it totally changes the way you watch TV.
When you can grab the files off the PVR, to share or store, all the better!

Ok, a few more thoughts / questions in regards to this :-

Will the PS3 wake up from standby to record programs ?

Can it do series links ?

Where does the 7 day EPG come from ? - OTA or via broadband ?

Can the Play TV interface be used to watch & play video / music from the HD ? and what about the proposed Video On Demand ?

I guess we'll find out soon enough. I use BT Vision right now and if PlayTV comes anywhere close then it's gonna be a marvel !!.
