There isn't anything that "women do" or "men do", apart from basic physiological processes such as breathing. Anyone who assigns common behaviour to a couple of billion people solely because they have the same type of genitals is making a fool of themself.

There are some tendencies within a specific society (which strongly indicates that they are socialised rather than innate) but that isn't the same thing at all.

Even where people do see different tendencies (and then, for no real reason, talk about those tendencies as absolutes) there isn't that much difference. Consider, for example, the men on these forums who collect watches. How is that significantly different to collecting shoes? Which isn't limited to women anyway - I know men with a couple of dozen pairs of footwear. Or the man I know who has bought about 20 mp3 players - why?

Someone always does, without even realising what they're doing.

I am arguing that people are all different.

You (and others) are arguing that all men are the same and all women are the same.

You criticise me for ignoring differences and arguing that people are all the same.

I don't see how you (or anyone else) can think that makes any sense. You're criticising me for making the argument that you're making and that I'm opposing. How can you not notice what you're doing?

You can be sorry all you like, but I am not going to start believing that everyone must conform to whatever sexist stereotypes you or anyone else approves of, I am not going to agree that "they're all the same" and I am not going to start saying that difference is sameness and sameness is difference.

I haven't noticed anyone in this thread suggesting that ALL women are the same. What most people are pointing out is that there are certain traits which apply PREDOMINANTLY (but not exclusively) to a certain sector of the population, roughly defined by gender.

Not all women watch soap operas but most do, not all women love clothes shopping but most do. Most men watch sport but not all do, most men are physically stronger and more aggressive than women but not all are.

Many traits are so much more predominant in one sex that they can be applied almost solely to that particular gender. I'm not a big fan of steeotyping but I'm not that blinkered that I don't realise that there are significant differences between the sexes that will always be there no matter how liberal you are.

Besides, gender stereotyping is fun. Now lighten up and join in :p

I'm not keen on the tendency MOST women have of assuming that, if their best friend hasn't answered their text within 5 minutes that she's fallen out with her and is talking about her behind her back with her sworn enemy (who used to be her best friend until she started hanging around with x and y - the bitch). This scenario is over simplified but I'm sure most of you know what I mean.

There have been 2 or 3 people who have been talking about tendencies rather than absolutes (I'm one of them). Everyone else has been talking in absolute terms.

So you're the one talking complete ********. If your paragraph above bore any resemblence to the contents of this thread, I wouldn't be posting in it.

It's quite sad to see so many people so strongly defending their favoured sexist stereotyping and nowadays rather unusual for them to be men so outraged that anyone objects to their negative stereotyping of women.

Not all stereotypes are negative, and women can also post negative thing about men if they wish.

I beg to differ.

The only person I see talking in absolutes is you. You use the term sexist stereotyping to describe any gender based comments made in this thread unless the poster makes it clear they are aware the observation does not apply universally - if that's not talking in absolutes, I don't know what is. To insist time and again that any observation which applies a particular trait predominantly to one gender is sexist is narrow-minded in the extreme.

It is possible to apply certain patterns of behaviour to one gender or the other and not be sexist, without having to add a caveat to the post indicating that the author realises that not all members of the gender in question necessarily display that particular trait. Many of the posts which you think are absolutes, I would imagine, are made by people who don't feel the need to clutter their posts with caveats which should be unnecessary to all but the most pedantic of people. I doubt very much if the majority of people posting in this thread are stupid enough to believe that the observations they have made actually apply to all women or men and to suggest they are is, frankly, insulting.
