Play TV for PS3 - news

well thats what I mean.

It wont sell new consoles and it wont appeal to many enthusiasts because it has limited use. You have to be in an odd situation to make it worth spending money on. There isn't enough good stuff I miss on TV that I cant download to watch on any device I like, that Id be prepared to pay 100 quid for a box to remember to record.

its just my opinion I dont see this going far.
The problem there is that there could well be new government legislation coming out soon which means that all ISP's are required by law to monitor what you download and can then ban you from having an internet connection if you are found to be downloading illegal stuff.

How does it reduce the stack of boxes?

It is an extra box , unless you had at the moment a freeview box going into some kind of hard drive pvr then into the tv ? I dont think many people have such a setup ?
It's a tiny little box though so doesn't take up anywhere near the room of a standalone PVR.

Don't see many pc tuning cards with the ability to wake the pc and start recording, or have dual HD tuners or the ability to be controlled anywhere in the world through wifi and a psp and also the ability to control and stream the content to anywhere through a wifi connection and a psp.

There is no dual HD tuners. There are 2 standard DVB-T tuners. When HD over Freeview appears, this PlayTV and 98% of all freeview boxes will become redundant as they do not have the hardware in there to decode *** HD signals.

The rest of it is all very useful, as long as it is priced at £50 quid or less. In essence I don't want to pay more as it is using a HDD ion my ps3 that I already own to do the recording, if a HDD was included they could justify £100 but not just a small box not much bigger than a pack of fags with 2 aerial slots and 1 usb port in it!!

True, but the box costs more than 100 pound plus the added monthly subscription.

Not necessarily, you can get Sky+ for free on a minimum contract now that SkyHD is out I believe.
Either way, I'm not saying this PlayTV is a bad thing, it's the complete opposite. I'd rather have something than nothing at all.

Strange thing is that it has been reported that it has dual HD tuners so it is ready for any free to air HD channels by many technology outlets.

I could very well be wrong, just going by the majority of info that has been presented.

i have not seen anywhere that actually says they are HD tuners. As far as I am aware to see any free HD content you need a SkyHD box (that has the HD decoder in it) or the box that bbc/ch4/itv gave out a couple of years ago for people testing the HD service over Freeview. I am certain a commercial version does not yet exists for Freeview HD.

If it had dual HD tuners, I would possibly think about paying £100 but that is because it then offers new functions that existing freeview TVs/boxes don't offer.

I'm not sure the tuners themselves actually need to be 'HD', just the decoding stuff behind them. All (if not, 99.9%) PC DVB-T cards are ready for HD broadcasts.

You should remember that you're paying for software development too - not just the hardware. If they can get this thing ticking over whilst you're playing games / watching blu-rays etc then thats gonna be great. Then there's future software upgrades etc etc. I'm not justifying the price - in fact I dont think we have any concrete proof of the launch price do we ?.

Cant be arsed to read the article but can you view the tv guide and change channel with the PSP whilst watching tv on the PS3? That would be so sweet for my uni room as im using a usb dvb tuner at the min and its pants at the best of times.

Why couldn't you just use the PS3 remote or DVD remote?
edit: Nevermind, I see what you mean. You want the TV guide on the PSP not on the TV screen.

I don't think your understanding me, I don't think any one actually needs that aside from international business men. The lack of free wifi makes the psp bit not really feasible.

All these things like that sound great but in reality I have only ever watched a movie 'on the go' about three times as I , like many others, am never away from home long enough to care or if I am I have better things to do than watch coronation street.

Also as stated it doesnt have twin hd tuners, it doesnt even have one.

This is going to be useless for me :(
I have V+ - the main reason being that normal aerial reception is rubbish. It's a shame since it looks like a nice new toy for me to play with.

Well I must say that I am personally interested as I am as much of a tech head as the next geek and will always find uses for tech that others deem useless just for the fact of using it if the option to do do is there.

Yes it does have twin HD tuners. Some European countries use a standard of HD DVB that can decoded by many existing DVB tuners and so that makes them HD capable / compatible. The UK does not have HD DVB yet and when we do it's not likely to be comptible with the Euro standard - but that's not Sony's fault.

Who mentioned HD anyway LOL ? - it's not even out yet so I may be contradiciting myself anyway

Bit wary about the "no recording while playing games at launch" that would have to be sorted out before I'd buy (failure to record Inspector Morse etc. would be bad for my health).
Once that is sorted I'll pick one up and maybe, just maybe, the unholy union of WMCE and 360 that rules over my house with an iron fist will be broken.

Yes it does have twin HD tuners.

I have seen nothing to state that they are HD tuners (or that the device can decode OTA HD signals, I guess the test will be to try and view the BBC HD channel on Freeview when it is released).

You should have quoted my entire post - I went on to doubt the HD claim and even offered the possibility that I could be contradicted.

I doubt it will work with BBC HD on Freeview anyway as the UK standard for HD will be nothing like the Euro standard.
