Looking at getting a new(ish) carr, looking at Golf GT TDI's (01-03), probably 130Bhp but would settle for a 150Bhp model :p

Anyone got opinions on this car, all i keep hearing is that they are great and everyone wants one, but no actual advice on how good they are.

What would be better as well, a bank loan to buy it, or car finance. Also what are the warranties like from garages, or is it better to get a private warranty from a seperate company. I need the warranty as do 15-20k per year, and need my car for my job. Looking to spend 7-8k max, and seen a couple decent ones around, just need advice on the car in general and also how to finance it.
 
I'd take a Bank Loan over having Finance, at least then if you wish to re-sell the car you can simply sell it, and buy another.

Where do you hear this?

My opinion is that they're overrated and I'd personally go for something like a Leon Cupra or Mondeo ST (petrol or diesel). Why do you want a diesel?


edit: This thread will descend into a battle between Golf naysayers (Team leader: Fox) and those who like them, so apologies in advance ;)

Diesel because of the milage i do, and i have looked at Cupra's but looking to be out of that 8k limit, well with decent milage on. Plus Golf's have decent re-sale value

Mileage really isn't an issue, it's how it's been treated/maintained that means far more
 
That's so boring and overpriced-looking compared to the Leon and Mondeo ST, sorry. I wouldn't recommend it.
 
Look further afield then. Or change what colour you're after. Black is a bugger to keep looking clean anyway ;)
 
Anyone on here own a Golf GTTDI? I have drove a leon before and they were ok, granted it was not a cupra. But the same engine etc is in the Leon as is in the Golf.

Any advice on warranties?

At the minute i'll go with either, but i have looked around and seen you can get warranty's from companies even if you buy private. Going to do the figures tonight of getting finance through a dealer, with a warranty. Or get a loan and a seperate warranty, and various combinations of the above!
 
Massively over-rated and thus massively overpriced. Everyone seems to get really excited about what it is really just a reasonably potent (Yet not so much that it'll set your trousers on fire) diesel hatchback.

Look at this logically - it makes absolutely NO sense to spend nearly £8k on a 6 year old diesel hatchback. It's totally daft, and to do so just becuase the odometer says '34k' is ridiculous.

Plus you want a black one. Lets think about this for a second. A car thats only done 34k in 6 years is going to have spent its entire life doing short trips into and out of town. Now, even leaving aside the fact that mechanically speaking this is bad for the car, where are cars that only go into town parked? In town. Where they pick up scratches, dings, dents and the usual town-related trolleyrash. And what colour shows all these marks and imperfections up the best? You guessed it - black.

The Golf, whilst the most over-rated car ever and annoying as a result, does some things well - one if its main strengths is that its built better than anything else in its class. As a result of this there is simply no need to pay massively over the odds to get something 'low mileage'. Its totally pointless.

And does the fact even the GT TDI looks just like a boring 1.4 Match not put you off? They all just look like 'Some Golf' - no bodykits or sportybits to set them apart unless you get the R32 or the GTI Anniversery.
 
i wasnt trying to flog ours on here obviously just she had mentioned about changing it soon ;) yes you can get warrantys on private cars no problem, obviously if you buy one from a dealer and something goes wrong its a lot less hastle as sometimes if you buy a private car and need to make a claim they sometimes (not always) send an inspector out etc to check its not bogus, if you plan to keep the car full term of loan then there is little in it but if you get bored and want a change the penalty's on a car loan tend to be a lot higher
