Birdcam 2008 - The Official Thread

They will use as much CPU as is spare!

Just to note that although I have a 4 port card the camwizrd software can only capture 1 input at a time.

There are other software such as the PICO software that can do 4 at once but this wasn't a requirement for me.

As I say it struggled on an 800Mhz Athlon and is rock steady on a P4 2.8Ghz so somewhere in between would be the minimum I would guess.

The capture cards also tend to be limited to 25-30fps which is shared between the inputs so if you're capturing 2 then 15fps max on each channel

Well I have a P4 Hyperthreaded 2.6 which I leave on all the time.
I use it as a web server, a PVR (Dual Freeview card) for recording TV Programmes, it grabs my podcasts and any scheduled downloads / torrents.. so it does a lot, but not all the time.

All 4 channels would all be set on motion detection only, so not sure if the loads would be that great for the majority of the time.

Sounds OK to me then although as I say the software I'm using can only monitor 1 input at a time so Camwizard would be no good.

I did try the PICO2000 1.9 and there other home offering but the 1.9 wouldn't do half the notification stuff I needed and the other offering would just crash on loading :(

Nice idea. Keep us posted :)

The "pair" came back again this morning:

Hey, lets hope they move in. a second viewing is a good sign anyway...

Should be joining you soon, bought the bird box, and ordered the camera, card, and in mid "bid" for the cable. Also drummed a bit of interest up from my daughters now too, who were very excited at the purchase of the bird box.
Just have the annoying wait for the good to arrive from the far east now...

I may, if you don't mind post any good results on this thread. I won't be offended if you don;t want me too.

Very quiet couple of days. A few visits from a single bird but not much action otherwise.

I am concerned having looked at other peoples previous attempts that the birds may attack the camera so we'll have to see how that one pans out!

Nobody on the dev forum was able to help me with scripts to auto upload the files to youtube so at the moment if there is anything interesting I am uploading them myself!

why don't you setup a live stream and let stickam host the stream for you, they will take the initial feed from you and relay it to other people, its a free service also.
