Oh brother where will it end

Yeah, even if they wanted to make it illegal, they never would or could for that matter

90% of people would ignore it, and they are hardly going to arrest millions of people at a time. Plus serious riots would ensue

Plus they would lose a lot of money through tax paid when buying cigarettes

If it was made illegal I could actually see many people quitting, a shortage of supply for even a few days could help people quit. I doubt serious riots would ensue considering the small % of the population that do smoke.

Is it £1000 for a specific MP or do you get a free run throughout all the Parliaments of the UK for that sum? If the former then it is tempting but requires a bit of though, if the latter it suddenly sounds like an absolute bargain.

Oh don't worry, it's all of them.

Nanny state gone mad, if an adult wants to smoke then that is their decision.

All smokers know the risks, and those who are for it need to pull their heads out of their backsides and grow up alittle.

Nothing worse than self-righteous non / ex smokers.

I don't smoke myself, I do find the taxation stupid, but a licence I find a good idea, This would surely prevent more underage people getting fags, It won't be all but a step closer.

I guess you've got a point. Most kids round here just ask someone who they know is old enough to go get them. Say a group of teenagers knows three 18+ year old lads. Any one of them could go buy them cigs at the moment but if this permit was in place, those three will need to have a permit. If they don't smoke then obviously those teenagers will be screwed. Saying that, they will probably just stand outside the shop bugging people to buy them (like I used to).

It's still lame.

Yeah this is BS. I never liked smokey pubs so i supported the move to make smokers go outside, but this is just persecution. Smokers are outside now, doing no harm to anyone but themselves, and they are still getting jerked about.

This is everything that is wrong with Britain.

Not immigrants, not crime. The government.

Tons of red tape, our loss of rights to "fight terrorism", no protesting near westminster, and so on.

fair enough for adults but the number of kids being able to get hold of fags would surely decrease. all kids do is ask someone outside a shop or whatever but if that person isnt holding a permit, they're screwed.

its a good idea in that respect but in fairness, its all a bit of a joke. money is all the government cares about!

edit: make it free if they really want to make a difference!

But if the permit itself is free at point of receipt then the costs will be raised in other ways, which then probably means that everyone who pays tax has to pay for it whether smokers or not. The other option would be to raise the duty on cigarettes again, which doesn't seem entirely fair given that most smokers will be old enough to buy cigarettes legally anyway.

I do agree with your other point, reducing the number of kids smoking would be good but I don't think this will achieve it to any significant degree.

you arent being affected by smokers anymore as they cant smoke in public places. :o

And that did work well after all? Nearly everyday whilst i wait at the bus stop someone stands near me and smokes and whilst im out in town loads of people walk about and smoke. We're hardly not being affected anymore.

So, I bet you breath more exhaust fumes in than you do cigarette smoke. You want to ban all forms of internal combustion engines too?

Its not a good idea....it may be for smoking now but it will be for alcohol next.....etc etc........a licience to shag.

Licenced to thrill

A car 3 metres anyway from you is a tad different than a fag 1 foot from you.

Agreed, why do people think it's OK to smoke in busy public areas? I don't want to smell and inhale your second hand ciggerette smoke.
