hi folks

I'm considering purchasing a 24" LCD to replace my old 17" Viewsonic:

Budget: 350 max (including delivery)

Need: hdcp compliant, preferably a hdmi port for xbox360

I've been reading that S-IPS is better than S-PVA is better than TN, but I don't really know what that means to me I'm afraid. I'm guessing that in my price range I'm looking at a TN anyways. I've been looking at the Acer P243W, the Hyundai W240D-TN, the Samsung SM 245-B (no hdcp?), and the Dell Truecolour E248WFP (no hdcp?) here on ocuk, but I have absolutely no idea what is the best for me. It's gonna be used mostly for gaming with my 8800GT dual core system and my xbox 360, any info or advice would be much appreciated.

I think you'll want one with a good few inputs. A 2407WFP will be good for that as it's got a good few inputs and HDCP, but I'm guessing it's out of your price range. The Samsung SM-245B would be great, It has a DVI connection, you could always get yourself an HDMI to DVI cable, 2 HDMI cables, and an HDMI Switch, you'd be able to have both your PC and 360 connected at the switch. You can get a 3 port switch for about £20

I got the Samsung SM-245B on Saturday to upgrade my 17" and I was blown away, I would highly recommend this monitor and use both my Xbox (Via VGA) and PC (Via DVI) on it.

I have been using a BENQ FP241W for a while now and I cannot fault it.

HDMI, VGA, DVI, Component, S-Video etc. 1:1 pixel mapping. 8 bit panel for true colour. No ghosting in games or movies. Excellent heavy stand with screen rotation and ability to raise and lower the screen height + angle. Games look amazing at 1920 x 1200.

Its a little expensive but you get what you pay for.

many thanks for your suggestions, I do like the look of the samsung but am keen to get hdcp with hdmi for my xbox 360. I've read a lot about the Dell on the forums here but am curious about the ghosting issue I keep reading about - how significant would this be for gaming use? The BENQ looks very impressive, and like the Dell, is a bit pricey, but maybe I should save up some more cash and invest in something I will be using for at least a couple of years. Thanks again for your help, will let you know if and when I make a purchase :)

[edit] the Hyundai was almost sold on me, but I read a few negative reviews about the picure quality on the web, but being not to familiar with the pros and cons of LCD's I couldn't really appreciate the signficance of the critisisms of it

I have the OcUK one and run both a PC and 360 through it (VGA for the 360), looks great and works very well. It has the same panel as the BenQ mentioned above iirc (AUO m-pva) so the BenQ would be a good choice for your needs.

+2 (although my 360 is currently dead :()

was very tempted with the ocuk, but I've got an xbox elite and are keen to use the hdmi (and the ocuk doesn't support hdcp so I can't even use a dvi adapter). I'm gonna save some more pennies for a bit and increase my budget :)

buy a VGA cable and get the OCUK monitor. VGA can display full 1080p if you buy the official one and picture quality is ace.

But the xbox doesn't support 1900x1200 res so it's stretched and doesn't look as good as it should. Although if you aren't too fussy and don't sit close to it like using a pc, it isn't too bad.

Yeah, I run my Xbox Elite on VGA into my Dell 2407, at 1920 x 1080 it gives a wierd effect on the screen where there is banding on the bottom half of the screen. If I adjust the sharpness control on the monitor it goes away.

But other than that its awesome - I run the PC into the DVI gotta have the better gaming platform running at its best :D. Other thing is that the Picture in Picture and Picture by Picture won't work with the VGA and DVI at the same time.

Might be worth hanging in for the 2408 which has 2 DVI's, HDCP, VGA and Display Port.

Do the 24" screens give you the option to display (say) a 720p picture without any kind of scaling (with black bars around the picture)? Or does some kind of scaling have to take place with xbox 360 720p and 1080p images?

Also, my new monitor will be used for pc games too. I am currently playing lord of the rings online with all settings at max (Gainward 8800GT and an E2200 overlcocked to 2.6GHz) at the LCD's native resolution (1280x1024), what kind of performance hit should I expect at 1900x1200 on a 24" LCD?

Depends what monitor you get. On some you can do 1:1 pixel mapping (black bars), but most cheaper monitors stretch it around.

IIRC that game isnt very taxing on a computer, so your system should be more than fine(although i see no reason for you to run your E2200 at such a low clock speed???) at higher resolutions.

It displays at 1080p but renders at 720p, it will still look equally impressive and their are a few games that look better at that resolution. i play on my 1050 monitor and still looks excellent at 720p.

i would still go for the ocuk value monitor and a vga cable.

What he means is the monitor is 1920x1200 whereas the image is 1920x1080, unless the monitor has 1:1 pixel mapping the image will be slightly stretched vertically. It's noticeable but not hugely distracting.
