9600GT hit the market in Feb 13, earlier than expected

It seems they don’t care about NVIDIA’s delay notice at all, South Africa website Take2 have already begin selling 9600GT 512MB for 2107 ZAR, as high as 273USD( which we know the card is only worth $189 USD). If you are rich and live in South Africa, why not buy one and have a try?

Non reference MSI card

Gigabyte’s 9600GT is a reference card, but MSI keeps their style, prepare to release a overclock version 9600GT with a red PCB and red cooler. As you can see, the cooler have two heatpipe and a big fan. We can expecting the cooler have a good performance.

(From the PCB style and DVI connector personally i think the card is made by TripleX. )

The OC version 9600GT’s frequency is 700/1950MHz, and reference version is 650/1800MHz. besides all this information, no more detail info are given.

I think so as its meant to be far better at utilising the memory on the card much better than the other cards.

Wonder if it can be as fast as the 8800GT at 1680x1050 with 4x-8xAA then, might be worth moving to the 9600GT when it comes out.

PC Online was able to measure the performance of the 9600GT and the results confirmed NVIDIA's claims of a 100% performance increase over the 8600 series for the most part. The 9600GT reached an overall score of 10813 while the 8600GTS and 8800GS had scores of 6251 and 10391, respectively.

Additionally, the 9600GT scored higher than the 8800GTS in many of the tests including 3DMark06 and games such as Crysis, BioShock, and Unreal Tournament 3. The 9600GT came up just a little short behind the 8800GS in only a few games such as Need for Speed: ProStreet and Colin McRae Rally (coincidentally, both being auto-racing titles).

Testing of the 9600GT was performed using Beta drivers so we may see additional performance squeezed out of this card and variants from NVIDIA's partners upon official release of a final product and drivers.

I think they've confused the 8800GTS with the 8800GS/8600GTS there in terms of the games performance.

It appears on paper anyway to be cut down 8800GT.

Yea, I cant see it being superior to the 8800 series now with AA if its a cut down 8800 and using G92 core.

If it scales the same way the other recent GeForce cards have in ratio of units terms, the 9600 GT theoretically should have more pixel fill rate power than the 8800 GT. Think about it this way - it appears that the number of ROPs are dependent on the memory channels enabled - since the 8800 GT, which has all memory channels enabled and all 16 ROPs of its core, is the same as the 9600 GT in that regard. The 9600 GT then has the advantage of higher core clock speed giving it a slight edge in that area. Edit: Though when I say 'slight', that is should probably be more emphasised.

Remember that this still isn't R600, it doesn't do AA with its shaders.

The 9600 GT should however be a fair bit weaker in more shader and texturing related tests, as it has half as many shaders and TMUs.

thing that confuses me is the 9600gt uses like the same core as 8800gt, doubt 50mhz clock speed will give it much advantage too.

I want to see some propor benchmarks, some people seem to be suggesting it could be an upgrade from an 8800GT with its apparent superior AA performance but with its 64 shaders I cant see it now.

i doubt its going to have 8800gt performance since its not supposed to be the replacement for the 8800gt, its the replacement for the 8600gt, and since my media pc uses a 8600gt to play games at 1360x768 the 9600gt will be a welcomed card if its priced at the same price a 8600gt is.

....but with its 64 shaders I cant see it now.

but as it seems will your basing your judgement of the card by its number of stream processors again.
if you want to play the numbers game then you shoudl go back to your 2900xt and boast about the 320 shaders on there.

who is to say that the 64 stream processors on the 9600gt have not been tweaked a little to offer more performance per clock to that of older generation cards?

either way the 9600gt is twice the speed of a 8600gt, and me being the user of a 8600gt i can say that its a massive leap in performance since the 8600gt runs stuff like DIRT, TDU and other games fairly well (even crysis on scaled back settings) and if its priced right it has a home for itself inside my media pc.

Prices ive seen floating about are daft , if it indeed is a replacement for a 8600GT.
