Toshiba calling it quits on HD-DVD

my thinking as well i dont want a ps3 so will get the hd-dvds that i want now and just go back to normal dvds for now, shame really oohh well bring on the cheap hd movies then

yup... i don't know whether to keep it for cheap HDDVD's and then sell it on? I don't want a PS3 yet.... no use for it, but then again, my HDDVD drive is just sat here as an extra..

I still have DVD players that are ancient going strong. I highly doubt the HD-DVD drive will go... it's not a PS3 BR drive you know ;).

We've still got our first DVD player (proline 1000) running, although it's at a friends now, and my 5 year old Toshiba 220E is still fine, despite many thousands of hours of use (it's run every disk in my collection, at least once, most of them multiple times).

A good quality player should last years, even modern ones (and I suspect as you say HD-DVD drives are probably still at the "quality" build rather than "cheap as possible" build stage).

HD DVD would have won if MS had put it into the 360. the reason it won was because the PS3 had it and was the cheapest player around as well as a next gen console. DVD was the same, didnt really get noticed until the PS2 was released.

I don't think MS wanted either format to win tbh.

Looks like we're all stuck with region coding then
I know that some studios don't use it like Warner Bros but far too many do and I'm still waiting for Lost on blu-ray to be released over here :(

I wouldn't have any problem with blu-ray if they just got rid of region coding on all films, that's what I like about HD-DVD since most of what I've bought has been imported. I personally think there's going to be a lot of content that we're still going to be made to wait for while the states have it for months in advance.

Also since I haven't really kept up with blu-ray in detail for a few months can anyone tell me how pip and interactive features are now on the format?I know there were some problems but I'm not sure what? I've kind of become addicted to them after the matrix box set.

On the plus side I'll probably import a HD-A35 cheaper than before.

Haha wasnt that the gold one? I remember my rents buying one when they first came out, came with a couple of DVDs iirc for around £200. That was so long ago thinking about it! edit: it came with Lost in Space and The Mask, haha!

Unlikely imo, I think the larger capacity of Blu-ray is a sole reason for HD-DVD to be beaten. Generally choosing an optical storage media with a lower capacity that doesnt offer any benefits to make it just seems like a backwards step, especially considering that the difference is about 20Gb (DL).

I dissagree, Joe public don't really bother about such things as storage space etc they just want to buy into the next big thing. All the PS3's sold having BD player built in definately made a big impact on BD sales as there were not as many standalone BD players sold as HD-DVD players yet the BD discs still outsold HD-DVD discs by a significant margin.
