That looks really good, brilliant write up!

I had a carputer but sold it about 6 months ago due to not using it enough.. you've done a much better job of it than I did as well!

http://www.digital-car.co.uk/ is also a good website (as I'm sure ConfusedTA will agree!) but I expect you've already come across it.

Has PC GPS software improved now as when I was looking to do this I couldn't find anything half decent so just got a TomTom instead.

Would like to do one someday though.
 
ooft, a lot of work seems to have gone into that.

I was thinking about ripping apart and old computer and trying to make one. but i have enough problems with my car without creating anymore :)

Hmmm, its still not brilliant for uk maps but theres a decenet program round the corner which should change that, its called "Sygic Drive" , seems to be on par with a tomtom.

yup and in this instance it came back pointless

A) whilst driving youre not legally allowed to use a phone, using a sat nav is legally dubious, i expect using a pc will be out of the question
B) ive got a pc at home and at work, why would i want to be using another in the car, i know people get addicted to face book etc, but doing it in the car is ott
C) sat nav? ive got a tomtom, putting that in didnt involve any grief at all. its accurate and gets me door to door when need. great
D) music? ive got loads in my car, if i really cared id just get a hdd headunit

so what other uses are there?

shame that the last 1/3 of the pics aren't working... so all the ones that show how it looks finished -.-
