Driving to Russia

Drove from Calais to Casablanca in a £100 1994 Nissan Micra last summer... it was about 1500miles and took us 5 days, but we took frequent stops along the way and took the scenic route through Andorra and mountains etc etc.

Good fun. :D

I would really try and overcome the fear of flying if I were you. I hate flying but when we lived in Cyprus i had to get over it if I wanted to see my boys. I really swear by Bachs Rescue Remedy take a few days before and on the actual day of course. Don't care if people say its all in the mind, It worked for me.

Anyone got a Bugatti Veyron for hire? :) I really dont want to go but dont have a choice.

Has the Russian Mafia (who are quite big in St. Petersburg) kidnapped your friends and family?

If you do fly DO NOT get on a Russian Airline, as it will justify all your fears.
You could drive through Sweden then get the ferry to Finland and then cross the border into Russia there, though it is known to be a bureaucratic nightmare.

Your doctor can give you diazepam which will reduce or even remove your anxiety for the duration of the flight. I used this when flying to New Zealand and can't recommend it highly enough.

Well I assume you have a visa? Also Russian airlines are fine for international flights, Aeroflot isn't really that bad on the London - Moscow leg.

Been to St Petersburg except I went on a boat, amazing city btw one of the best I have visited.

Your best bet is car ferry to somewhere in the Baltic if possible.

Just make sure you A) Take some boarder guard bribery money, and B) Know how say to them in Russian your legal rights as a Brit.

If you want to know how to say "Do you want a punch in the head", then say (phonetically) "Tee Hoe-Chis Flope" :D (but make it sound like a question lol.

Oh, and don't panic if they put a machine gun in your back, they are just trying to mess with you :p

Just for a bit of willy-waving a few years ago we took the R1's to Portugal and managed Bilbao to Faro in just under 10 hours. To be honest it was mentally and physically exhauting and there is no way I'd try 1000km a day now, it wasn't fun looking back on the experience and we took a lot longer and really enjoyed the journey when coming back

The place is in St Petersburg. I would obviously have to go to dover first. I would be there for about 3 hours. Not good.

Im going on my own in my Golf GTI Mk5 :/ eek.

Do you not mind sea crossings then? If so I'd take the ferry as far as I could, not just to calais.

Or if you don't need the car there perhaps a train all the way would be cheaper?

Driving long distance is good fun, but I would only do it with a friend/someone to keep me company.

Me and my mate drove from Nottingham to Monza for the Grand Prix in 2006. That was about 1000 miles one way from what I remember, we did the journey back by doing 17 hours straight.

I flew into Ukraine the other day and from the mid-eastern side of Poland, everything was white with snow. Every country was blanketed with heavy snow.

I think you may run into some problems with that, especially as you begin to head north into Lithuania.

Yeah its not looking good. I will have to just fight my fear. Its not that i dont like flying but its the feeling that YOU ARE NOT in control. This only applies to anything life threatning which flying is.

I dont think its going to be worth it. Hmm.

And you think that you are in control when driving 4000 miles in a few days?
So many other people on the road who will also be tired, maybe drunk or high. You might be in control of your own vehicle, but not in control of anything else going on around you.

Morba makes a very sobering point. When you get into the arse end of nowhere in the middle of Poland, Lithuania or Russia where the roads aren't exactly great and probably covered in heavy snow, do you think it will be safe to drive on them without snow tyres, having been driving constantly for a day or two before?

When flying, it's actually best that you are not in control. Leave it to the professionals ;) You are many many times more likley to die on your ludicrous road trip than you are on a flight over.
