Toshiba calling it quits on HD-DVD

blackmarket make it sounds like people are buying copies. These no law stopping people from importing dvds so it's clearly isn't a blackmarket.

I did actually mean that as 2 different points! If there is no region coding then its likely a larger blackmarket will appear, pirate copies arent just limited to a country anymore so obviously the customer base increases internationally. The use of foreign cheap labour and production costs aswell as loopholes in more relaxed legislations means benefical results to anyone envolved within the market.

Importing DVDs was my second point as its obviously going to be a lot more cost effective to order DVDs from a cheap import site rather than to buy RRP from a UK retail store, this obviously has economical effects.

nothing has been confirmed, wouldn't be surprised though.
It's been confirmed now. No links but I just did read an article that had been cut and sniped, but it was from Toshiba and genuine.

Now all I need to do is wait for a 2.0 standalone player to arrive and I'm sorted. In the meantime I'll raid online stores for low priced hd-dvd's.

If there werent region coding then I think there would be one massive blackmarket open for the disc format. It would be possible to get films v.cheaply imported from other countries and this would obviously affect retail sales. Films that are also released earlier in some countries, mainly the US, could be easily imported and viewed before the release date, whether large consumer spending in another country has economical effects on thier own could also be another possible point.
Like PS3 games?

And please dont tell me you prefer diarrhea brown to the blue?!
They are red, not brown. I like both, but prefer Blu-Ray boxes slightly.

Hi all, So would this be a good time to sell my HD360 add on and get a PS3 ? I dont want to lose to much cash on the addon as i can naturally put the difference into getting a PS3 and continue to rent out HD films.
Is it worth the extra expense ? I need to consider space under my TV !

until normal Blu-Ray/HD DVD players come to the market at a reasonable price its not really going to take off big time

at the moment its still a niche/enthusiast market because joe public wont buy a 300 quid player

as the cost of the players comes down then the user base increases..until at some point they become so cheap people put them in the shopping trolley along with the frozen peas

but there will be a price point where it becomes an impulse buy..maybe 150 quid..above that and its got to be a thought out decision at the moment

chances are I will end up getting a ps3 as I will use not just the blu ray player but also the games as well

Problem is, many people jumped on the bandwagon of buying a 360 a few years back.... which meant that ~£100 for a HD-DVD doesn't seem like a large purchase in comparison to buying a PS3 for blu ray capabilities for ~£350 when most of the games are on the 360 which they already have.

Then you have the people which have neither and look at the fact that a PS3 can play blu ray out of the box.... so I believe most will go for this.

I am stuck in the first crowd, with my 360 and all the games I want and I bought a HD-DVD add on as it was cheap for HD content. I am now stuck with the decision of selling it up and buying a PS3 for purely Blu ray capabilities, because none of the games appeal to me... yet.

Why not just keep the 360 and buy a Ps3 for films anyway. A stand alone player would cost the same anyway. Why does it have to be a decision to have one or the other. Sure you will get a bit of money off a trade in but your losing far more money doing that. You may as well save for a 2nd machine and have the best of both worlds.

why sell up just cos HD appears to be dying? surely there are films on HD that you like, granted they may end up on BD eventually but i wouldnt imagine anytime soon

I also have the addon but have no intention of selling it. yes we may have bought into a dying format but we've got entertainment out of, or at least I have. Ive def got my moneys worth out of it with the HD-DVD's ive bought. a BD drive to go with it in my comp would compliment my HD drive and collection nicely at some point i think :) but until then im gonna continue to enjoy the bounre films etc in HD lol

:D

ive just thought of something.....if HD-DVD has gone down the pan then that means Star Wars and LOTR will be commin out on BD as there is no other high def choice :D

They both would have anyway as they are distributed by Blu-ray exclusive studios, though Lucas has final say I think on Star Wars so I guess he could have chosen to release them on HD-DVD for some reason.

Star Wars belongs to Fox so that was always a Blu-ray only title. LOTR is New Line which was HD-DVD, but switched with Warner, so yes that will now be Blu-ray. The higher capacity of the disc should do justice allowing the extended version to be viewed on one disc rather than two now. I can't wait for some of these titles to come out.

Sorry, I didn't mean it to say Fox owns the Star Wars IP, that belongs to LucasFilm. What I should have wrote is along the lines of Fox has always been the distributor of Star Wars. I don't see that changing.
