Ok, me and gf need help with this!

She has now moved to the UK (UK resident) so needs to get UK Insurance, pay TAX, etc, etc but we're not too sure the best way to do it. (don't worry, she is still insured by french insurance)

Car ownership: Currently in her mums name (who lives in France) so it needs to be transfered to gf. If its done in france you have to pay a lot, so how would it be done here?

TAX, MOT, WTF, LOL: Would the car need to be MOT'd? And how would you register the car for TAX?

Plates: The car would also need new (UK) plates... how do you get these?

Sorry for being totally useless, but we don't have a clue!

Please Help!

Cheers,
Chris

afaik theres rules about how long you can have a car over here before you start having to get it officially imported

And you've got to remember, untill you apply for UK plates, its a french car so covered by french legislation regarding changing owners / paying french road dutty etc.. as Mot / UK tax etc.. doesnt apply to French cars. Obviously you cant go on dodging this all the time, hence the rules about how long a car can be in the country.

And importing a car costs money, to get UK plates etc.. If you're importing a mustang, or Subaru Impreza Special Editon S203, then its worth it, But for your runabout its not worth the hassle

just leave the Car in france and buy a UK car and cut yourself a ton of hassle.

I think you can run it for 6 months on frog plates and insurance etc without doing anything. As stated by others she should sell it in France and buy something here instead.

just done a quick search, it looks like it will cost roughly £200 to get it SVA tested to proove its roadworthy (if its less than 10 years old). Will then cost another £50 to register it to this country, then obviously cost you tax / insurance / mot etc..

and Direct.gov.uk shows it can be i the country of a max of 6 months per 12 month period before it has to be imported.

details here

Don't think it'll need a SVA, as the same model will have been sold in the UK?

That said, it's not worth importing the car. Driving a left hand drive in the UK is a pain, it would be far easier to sell the French car and replace it with a UK one.
