Erm I don't actually know what version I have but he goes in the room and all the stuff happens then he wakes up after drowning at the beach and thinks "wow....what a weird dream" but he is still in the room which he later finds out.
He is then phoned and told that it will continue to be like this so instead of dieing for no reason or letting his girlfriend come into the room he sets the room on fire and dies inside destroying the room at the same time.

I thought he got out after setting the room on fire and had a recording of the little girls voice and plays it for his exwife

On the version I have he doesn't but you see him as a ghost in samuel jacksons car at the end in a quick flash.

Thats the directors cut, he realises that the room will never let him go and torture him forever with the death of his daughter. So rather than do what the room wants and kill himself meaning he goes to hell, he burns the room and accepts his fate that he'll be a ghost in limbo.
That was the ending in the cinema release iirc? Haven't seen the dvd versions, but Cusack appearing as a ghost in SLJ's car sounds corny as hell......... I like it
discussed this with the gf's sister and we both thought it was a crap film, it dragged for me and just didnt entertain at all, it was all a bit predictable and didnt strike me as v clever. I generally expect a lot from films that are not mindless action or gore though, so nothing really gets my rocks off.

I watched it at the weekend with my GF too. We had to read Wikipedia afterwards to fully understand what was going on. We saw the ending from the DVD but it turns out that a different ending was shown in the cinemas.
I thought it was a bit **** tbh, and I normally like 99% of films I watch.

I also watched this with my GF, about a month ago. I'm not one for films like this, but she wanted to see me watch a horror/scary film, so I did. I'm so easily freaked out, it was horrible. I keep imagining myself in the poor guy's place and then I get a horrible feeling in my stomach and I start to feel all feverish. What a wimp. 
Made it through to the end, though then my GF did her impression of the horrible little girl from The Ring and I got all freaked out again 
The version I watched was the one where he pegged it, but I didn't see his ghost in the car at the end - I did see that horrible woman who kept jumping out and making me crap my pants, though.

Wasn't that hard to understand if I recall. But then I don't remember the ending. So probably was.
