hi all

i'm looking to get an 8800gt to last me about 6months, was considering a 3870 but the improved performance for almost no price increase is a no brainer. @22" 1650x1080 btw

ppl always say just buy the cheapest as they are all made by foxcon but i have 3 issues with this:

1. I want it to be fairly cool (comparitively speaking anyway) so which ones have the larger fan or better cooling?

2. Would prefer one with a decent warranty/make due to resale value in 6months time.

3. Max price £160 inc VAT.

Tempted by the BFG due to reputation but it has the small fan i think? Also considering the EVGA crysis edition for the same reason and need Crysis anyway so extra £30 is covered by the game tbh.

Link to rest.

I got the BFG OC from here last week and they're still using the smaller fan. Mine runs at 45 C idle, fan at 55% using Rivatuner. Highest I've seen it go is 63 C after a couple of hours of Crysis.

Just buy the cheapest GT you can find and slap an Accelero S1 cooler on it. Add a 92 or 120mm fan and you will have a very quiet card that will run MUCH cooler than any retail 8800GT.

Accelero's can be found new for a little over a tenner.

Just buy the cheapest EVGA GT you can find and slap an accelero s1 on then. EVGA's 10 warranty supports aftermarket coolers. Anyway, so long as you keep the old heatsink you can always put it back on and nobody will ever know.

leaning towards the EVGA now due to the release of the AKIMBO cooler (no idea when it will reach the uk tho...)

It'll probably be so close in price to a cheap 8800GTS that you'd be better off with that than the Akimbo 8800GT (which uses the 8800GTS cooler).

I've got the Gainward with the dual slot cooler, its excellent, it comes with the fan speed set at 33% all the time and is completely silent. I've upped it to 50% and I still can't hear it.

Thats the one.

Seconded. I have the same card, my second Gainward, and am very pleased. Was running about 45 C when playing Episode 2 all on high with 4xaa and thats with the fan at 33 percent or whatever the default is, and its not like my room is cold. :P

I ordered one of those too and got the old style cooler...

can't complain too much tho as I got mine on sale for £126 all in.

On old cooler my temps were I believe pretty standard i.e. 50c idle and 80c+ under load.

Fitted Accelero S1 and they dropped by approx 15c on idle and 30c on load - its silent as well !

If you bought an older model then would strongly recomend this combo.

However I have no idea how good the newer coolers are (either for temp. or noise) - it may well be you could get away just using the standard fit.

Probably best approach is buy what you fancy - you can always fit the Accelero later:D
