i just saw the ice hockey thread so i thought about this.

i love the game have been a fan for about 6 years i follow the atlanta falcons and play for a american football team in the uk, i also went to the wembley game between the dolphins and the giants

so any 1 else fans?

im a fan, but only just really started to get into it this year. I randomly selected the Packers as they were the first team i watched on Sky.

would like to get playing but dont know if im tall/fast enough.

Yup Giants fan here, been a Giants fan since they first won the Superbowl and having won it again makes it even more special to be a Giants fan at the moment. Been following NFL for a good 20 odd yrs...grew up in Canada so i was always into NFL, NHL and other american sports.

Been a fan for quite a few years. Used to go to a lot of the NFL Europe games.

Falcons fan but they aren't exciting without Vick :(

we have small guys on the team i play for i think the smallest is 5'6 he plays CB he pretty fast but doesnt carry much weight any size can play the game

how tall/heavy are you?

Played for 5 years at uni, Centre and Nose. Not played since leaving Uni. Don't support anyone in particular, but still enjoy watching. Went to the Wembley game and plan on going to the next one as well.

i play WR and CB (im 6ft and 14st) i prefer WR tho i hope i get tickets for the saints/chargers game as i loved giants/fins match i had pretty decent seats right on the halfway line but way up high

I am surprised a lot of you don't prefer college teams as the game is much more interesting.

There are lots of fans I believe and also my room mate whos on here plays too.

I can sort of appreciate the game for what it is, the trouble is I've always thought it hard to get into. The most celebrated game, i.e. the superbowl (erm, final?) is so riddled with stop starts and an idiot singing at some point that I just lose interest so quickly....

I really don't understand what it has over rugby.

It seems to be an over glorified nancy boy version of rugby with all the armor they wear and all the breaks they have.

Agreed, they seem to have a lot more passion same as College Basketball (march madness soon - sweet!)
I doubt that College sports gets covered at all though in the UK so that's probably why there is no following. I didnt realise until i moved over here.

That's a very mis-guided post i believe and this argument has come up many times before. I'm still sticking with American football players are far better athletes :)

How is it mis-guided?

Even if they were better athletes, they have a lot of breaks and wear armour, so it's a wasted asset.

Could they last as long as rugby players playing rugby?

And you didn't say what it exactly has over rugby, it seems like a dilluted rip off of rugby.

Why watch american football instead of rugby as a sport? ignoring the theatrics and corporate buzz of american football.

I'm not trying to start a flamewar as I don't really follow american football, that's why I wonder why a Briton would choose to watch it over rugby, it's a given that Americans are usually going to like it :p

I Agree with Mr White, I do not follow Rugby or American football, But i watch superbowl and Major Rugby games, so i know enough, the armor is ridiculous, ANYONE could where that armor and get absolutely hammered, and not come out with a scratch, and the intervals in NFL i hate :(, NFL has Better athletes i can understand, but if you took them out of that armor they wouldn't last 2 minutes, Have skin to skin, Rugby Vs NFL match, LoLs, NFL Ligaments everywhere.

But it's not really comparable though, that's why it's always annoying when people come in and say 'psssh rugby's better'. I'm English and played Rugby for years, yes it's a tougher sport but to come out and say that NFL is for nancy boys? lol.
If they did not wear their 'armor' it would be far more brutal then rugby is for sure, but again because it plays differently.
I agree though, all the stop starts are annoying and to judge it on the superbowl - there are about 2hours worth more than usual. But it's just the same when rugby gets stuck in a scrum for ages = pure boredom!

How isn't it comparable though?

It just seems like a watered down rip off of rugby, similar tactics and play, same ball, similar scoring system, touchdown (a try without placing the ball on the ground) and a field goal.

Same goal, similar pitch with distance markers, nearly the exact same size etc.

It seems very comparable to me.

To me though it seems like a much improved version of rugby if anything. Similar shaped ball, you tackle one another and you 'score' in the end zones - that's about as far as it goes.
You take an NFL player and place him in a rugby match - he'd be lost and wouldn't last, same goes for a rugby player I'm afraid.
Throwing the ball backwards or in line is not the way forward ;)

You definately need to speak with killa_ken, he moved from England and now plays college football.

Football players are far better athletes, the sheer power they produce and the hits they take are massive.

If a rugby player was to take an average hit from just a college football player he would be hospitalized.

If a college football player was to take a hit from a big time rugby player he'd most likely giggle.

If it wasn't for the padding they would get torn to shreds, believe me, I played highschool and the padding does very little when your getting charged at by a 340lb Offensive lineman who can run a 4.9 (faster than 90% of people)

You wont understand because you have never had the pleasure of meeting even one of these men, just they're presence is inspiring and their physical ability is nothing less than amazing.

You think they couldn't go for a whole game but need it be, Id place my bottom dollar they could. I witness everyday the mat drills running and endurance training they do and it's impossible to comprehend.

when you see guys who are over 300lbs run 3200m in under 11m30s it is something to take note off.
