Drum and Bass Dj Grooverider sentenced to 4 years in Dubai

lol This place makes me laugh, we moan when foreign people want to change our laws to suit them, we moan that we aren't tough enough on crime in the UK but then we complain when a foreign country's laws are harsher than ours. Oh, but only when it affects someone British.

Yep couldn't have put it better myself.

So many people who moan that *others* don't follow/want to follow the rules of [our] land, yet when it's a British guy abroad there's sympathy? Sorry but double standards if you ask me..

pah "punished appropriately" get real, you saying he honestly deserves to have those 4 years of his life taken away for that crime, it madness, just because it's a different country doesn't make it right, next your me telling be that it's fine that gays get stoned to death in Iraq, oh but wait thats different isn't it , this place is full of hypocrites.

4 years for possession and bringing into the country is an appropriate sentence - he should have been a lot more careful when he packed his case shouldn't he? Basically if you want to take drugs don't go to an Islamic country - common sense no?

Some of us don't live in a black and white world like you though, ever heard of "the punishment should fit the crime". I'm sorry but 4 years for posessing a plant in your belongings that is clearly for personal use is crazy, regardless if it's their law or not.

Bit of a muppet bringing illegal substances into a country where the laws governing those substances are so harsh. Shame it just happened to be one of my fave DJ's though :(

It might be crazy, but I think the saying goes "When in Rome...."

Only by our standards. Meanwhile the rest of the world laughs at the breakdown of law and order in our country and our low sentences for serious crimes.

Thats not my point, I agree he should be punished as stated earlier, but your telling me I'm not allowed to feel sympathy for him at the length of the sentence because I also want people in this country to abide by our laws.

This might come as a shock, but it is possible to want both you know!

Doesn't our law say something like 7 years for posesion of heroin, we just never bother as we have no space or money to prosecute?

I'd be scared to even enter that country incase I accidently stood on something that contained drugs etc..

Mmm..personal attack, love it.

...the punishment should fit the crime..

Sorry but who are you to dictate what is a suitable punishment for bringing in weed to another country? A policy maker for the country, part of the team of doctors or researchers who act as government advisors that happen to know the drug inside out, a police officer with years of experience on narcotics?

It might seem harsh - but the law is there to govern their own country and their rules as such have to be adhered to.

clearly for personal use is crazy...

Even crazier than that is the fact he didn't know it was on him? Personal Use? I don't know how much weed is 2grams is there *no* chance that he's going to be giving a bit out?;)

I'm not saying their laws don't need to be adhered to? I'm saying it's a harsh sentence.

Surely you don't just pass off the stoning to death of women in other countries as "their laws which they must abide by, they knew what they were doing, so they deserve what they get".

Apologies for having some compassion,

And if we did do you really think we would waste our taxes & resources on filling prisons with people that have a shot of heroin on them, we have more common sense than that, taking 4 years of someones life away for 2 grams of pot is wrong regardless of whether he made a mistake or not and regardless of the laws of that country, sometimes commonsense has to override the moral high ground.

2 grams is barely a couple of fat joints, he was hardly going to have a party with it.

Crazy really. He's been held pending trial for a while too. When you consider the dude a few weeks ago getting busted for having a flake of weed on his shoe I suppose at least this is understandable. I don't agree with the sentence (I appose it!), but you have to remember that there are still states in the USA where this crime would land you a much higher sentence!. He got busted with a joint and a porno mag in his record back iirc. He really should have left them both at home :(.

Oh, and it does seem that a lot of the people being arrested/searched seem to be of the black persuasion...

Again it's not really your place to really decide what's harsh or not...

I don't understand where stoning somebody to death has come into this? The article's short - is the DJ going to be stoned to death?

Oddly enough when you talk about stoning to death - are you thinking of Iraq or Iran? Because last time I checked the UAE was a different country entirely. I appreciate that because the mainstream religion is the same throughout the Middle East one country must be identical to another. God I'd hate for England to be judged for something that France did?;)
