Yeah but demon you miss the point.
If Nintendo can attract non traditional gamers, then you better believe it that Sony can too with the angle of how great the PS3 is as a Blu Ray player and games machine for the family/kids all in one. They have so many angles for why a PS3 in the home is a benifit.
Once Sony get a customer to buy a PS3 well they then offer so many more ways to get more money from them. Theyve already succeeded in converting most Blu Ray player sales as PS3 sales and for the sake of £50 - £100 i think the majority of people see the additional value they get over say a standalone player, particulary if they have kids.
Sony Revenue Benifits:
PS One & PS2 Classics - Downloads
PSP downloads
Home (money from sponsers and advertisers)
Home (sales from customisation items to possibly millions of users)
System Benifits
Web Browser on your HDTV
PSP Wireless conectivity benifits
CD Blu Ray & DVD movie playback
Upcoming TV features with wireless control or sending to PSP
Upcoming Sony Playstation mobile phone
Ok i think you get the picture but imo this HD-DVD failure news puts Sony in a position to massivly increase thier marketshare and re-achieve back its exclusives with certain developers in the games industry. I cant see Microsoft fending off an onslaught of PS3 sales as its not just about the games anymore... I would also expect Sony to release like they did with PS2 unsuccessfully in Japan a more traditional stanlone styled player that incorporates a much larger HD, the new freeview TV card thingy and all the needed PS3 tech. (id certainly buy one too)
If anuthing id assume that it will have Microsoft reconsdering when thier next console will be expected.
An interesting but rather skewed view..
I think you miss the obvious point that parents don't want their kids taking over the TV with the PS3, they are not going to pay extra to then have them hogging the TV forever in a day...
Just looking at the PS2, which is a DVD player and 'so much more', I don't see any evidence to suggest people are buying the PS2 rather then a standalone DVD player for the front room, which is kind of what you are suggesting, parents buy them for the kids bedrooms, not the front rooms..
I see that you've turned into a bit of a fanboy, I merely mentioned what I believe is a sensible comment that selling the PS3 at a loss and having it as the only decent cheap BR player could possibly not be the best thing for them now the 'war' is won, it's served it's purpose, etc and you've somehow turned this into how microsoft should be worried, as Sony are set to take over the planet with their all singing all dancing uber 'machine'..
I just love that feature list..
1. Web Browser on your HDTV - not a mainstream feature
2. PSP Wireless conectivity benifits - you need a PSP for this, the best selling handheld is a DS, and again it's not mainstream, it's just a marketing tick box.
3.CD Blu Ray & DVD movie playback - the BR is the only thing your standalone DVD player doesn't have.
4. Upcoming TV features with wireless control or sending to PSP - the PVR addon is the price of a good PVR, and no-one has confirmed if it can record while playing a game, it looks so far like it can't.. and even then it's no good for the largest market, the US..
5.Upcoming Sony Playstation mobile phone - is this for real? so lets see, does this involve actually having the PS3 on and the TV switched onto 'view' the PS3 for it to be useful?
I'll just go back to reading threads and not posting.. I think we must live on different planets, I must go over to planet playstation sometime to see what I'm missing..
