Hi there, a few nights ago i was out with my friend in his car, coming home from town. I live pretty close to a motorway junction, and an exit off this particular junction has a set of lights, followed by a two lane stretch of road up a steepish hill. Now as this hill is off the motorway lots of people are hooning up it and racing. Now just before the hill begins there is a 30/40 degree left hander.

Anyhow, me and the friend were sat at the lights and this little boy racer came along side in his crappy peugeot 106, so we thought we should burn him from the lights which we did, then it came to the left hander, my friend kept his foot in it, which isnt that bad as its not that sharp. But then the rear end came out, slid round for about 2 seconds then it seemed as if the driver had controlled it.

It was however the traction control kicking in. i was amazed how good it was, we must have been doing at least 45-50, and for it to control a slide like that without much steering input was amazing.

i was just wondering how exactly it does this, is it using the brakes or power or what? oh well glad it was there, or i probably wouldnt be here lol

It uses the brakes and cuts the power to the wheels in question to maintain stability. It is not the sort of thing you should be experiencing on a public road unless you've made a cockup. Regardless of the now '306 DTurbo' level of silly comments about DSC as a result of PMKeates idiocy it is a very efficient and excellent system - but it wont defy the laws of mavity.

Was this in Plymouth? Sounds a lot like the A38 exit from Manadon and the hill that goes towards Mutley Plain.

Tell your mate burning people off the lights in a 520i automatic is a daft idea.

No this is junction 15 of the M4 near where i live. and also its a manual. yeah and thats exactly what it was a cockup, just happened to probably look pretty good at the same time. and teach those little boyed up cars a lesson. glad it was there though.,

Was the 106 even trying? I can't imagine a 520 would 'burn' many things in a drag race

1500kg and 2.2 170bhp if his mates is a facelift model - its not going to set your trousers on fire but it should see off anything the the slow side of a 106 GTi.

If its that white thing he posted before though its a staggering 149bhp from a 2 litre engine. Fast.. :/

I did this in a BMW 320i. Exactly the same situation. Exactly the same type of road. Except no TRC, so it span 180 and I went backwards into the dirtch at the side of the road. It hurt.

ooh alright, we havent all got the money to pay for 530i's which car burn everything at the lights. this thread wasn't about my friends car being "powerful" it was about the ability of the cars ASC and the praise i have for it.

I don't think ASC uses the brakes does it? I thought that was just DSC.

ASC cuts power to the wheels, DSC cuts power to the wheels and applies the brakes on them, it's hardly rocket scine?

It could be argued that having the ability to discern when one has their tongue planted firmly in their cheek is even less like rocket science..;)

thank the lord for DSC.

keeping know-nothing-numpties on the road

Don't you think you've exhuasted that joke now? I doubt Sam will ever post about how awesome his DSC-fuelled driving ever is again, so it's attained its goal in life, time for a new joke :p
