Virgin cable slow gaming

I started noticing dropouts roughly a week ago, nothing major but enough to think something isn't right.
Yesterday whilst playing TF2 i would have periods of severe slow down on a 30 ping server until yesterday i completely lost my connection. I phoned up and spoke to them where he told me there was a problem in my area and as usual it fixes itself whilst on the phone which always seems to be the case.
However gaming is still a nightmare and it will freeze every time i get into a firefight or when im in an area with a lot going on.
Not a happy chappy as its appears to work then it spikes a lot making it almost impossible to browse the nest let alone play online.

Hi :)

I've had loads of problems with the broadband recently and it looks like i've finally got it sorted. We are on the 4mb package and i'm confused. When i do speed tests, or donwload from proper places ( apple ) then i get the full 4mb, but when i go on xbox live everything is slow, i keep getting disconnected and am having loads of problems. Web pages also sometimes take ages to load.

I'm using a wireless connection for both, going to an SMC networks router ( Wireless N 'barracuda' ? ). I'm wondering if the router is the problem ?

I was going to leave and go to 02, but i am sure it's not virgins fault now, and i want the 50mb when it comes out.

i had a very similar problem with them not to long ago

go to start.. then run, type "cmd".. then in the dos prompt type "ping bbc.co.uk"

when i had similar problems you explain i was getting 50,75,100 packet loss. i was told there was problem in my area and i waited 3 weeks for it to be fixed untill i finally rang them bak and threatened to leave and i was swapped servers and havent had a problem since.

Have you tried connecting it with a cable to see if you still get the problem? Try with different security settings on the router (wep / wpa / wpa2). Try differen't wireless signals to.

My brother had this problem, he connected it with the cable and its been fine since.

Use cable for Gaming Dude & Ignore All the posts after mine telling you other wise.

On VM 4Mb and find that recently loading web pages is really bad, last night half the sites i went on wouldn't load, just timed out. Went onto STEAM and loaded DOD:S and it performed perfectly, no network slowdown. Cabled direct to router and not using a proxy, so not sure what is causing that.
